Tropical Daylighting for Working Environment

My new book titled “Tropical Daylighting for Working Environment” is published!  The book discusses the potential use of daylight in tropical regions with a special focus on the working environment.  It includes practical architectural design strategies as well as recent research on tropical daylighting.

Kuala Lumpur Low Carbon Society 2030 – FGD 3

The 3rd Focus Group Discussion (FGD) for “Kuala Lumpur Low Carbon Society (LCS) Blueprint 2030” was successfully held on 31st July 2017 at Hotel Premiera, Kuala Lumpur.

I was the facilitator for the Low Carbon Green Building Action Group. Thank my team members Prof. Dr. Mohd Hamdan Ahmad, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gurupiah and Christopher Heng. Also thank all the participants from SEDA, GBI, IEM, ACEM, CIDB, DBKL, etc. for giving their valuable comments and suggestions.

3-day Workshop on Revit for BIM Authoring – Essential Training

I’m thankful that the 3-day Workshop on Revit for BIM Authoring – Essential Training had been successfully conducted on 24th – 26th July 2017 at CAD Center, Faculty of Built Environment, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

The participants consisted of postgraduate students from UTM and Wawasan Open University as well as practicing architects from RDC Arkitek and y.architects.

The workshop covered fundamental understanding of BIM concept, process and applications.  Besides that, there were 5 modules on Revit hands-on exercises where the participants learnt to use Autodesk Revit for BIM authoring.

Visit to Forest City

I’m grateful for a fruitful technical visit to the Forest City project in Iskandar, Johor.  Together with a few engineers, we had the opportunity to tour around a few buildings and construction sites including a case study project of precast construction using building information modelling (BIM).

M.Arch. Students Win ARCHITALENT Design Competition

Congratulations to my Master of Architecture students Ooi Soon Theng and Wilson Tan Xern Ee for winning prizes in ARCHITALENT Architectural Student Design Competition, which was held from 11 May to 20 July 2017 in conjunction with the 18th International Architecture, Interior Design & Building Exhibition 2017 (ARCHIDEX17).

The competition was organised by Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) in collaboration with C.I.S Network Sdn. Bhd. Over 70 submissions were sent by students of accredited architecture schools and institutions across Malaysia, where 20 shortlisted finalists presented their ideas to a panel of industry-led judges at the Plenary Theatre of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on 20 July 2017.

Ooi Soon Theng, who is in the 1st year of the Master of Architecture programme and under my supervision in Envirotectonic Studio, won the Grand Prize of RM3,000, a certificate and an air ticket sponsored by Malaysia Airlines to UIA 2017 Seoul World Architects Congress in September in South Korea. His project title is “Wind Driven Ventilated Malaysia Green Building Confederation Learning Centre”.

Apart from that, another 1st year of the Master of Architecture programme student who is under my supervision, Wilson Tan Xern Ee had been selected as one of the finalists in the competition with his project titled “High Water Research Center”.

 

ICRIIS 2017 Best Paper Award

Thank God that my paper titled “BIM-based Sustainable Building Design Process and Decision-making” has received the Best Paper Award in the 5th International Conference on Research and Innovation on Information Systems (ICRIIS 2017), under the conference track of “Innovations in Construction Industry through Building Information Modelling”.  The conference was held on 16-17 July 2017, at ADYA Hotel, Langkawi, Malaysia with more than 100 papers presented.  Furthermore, I was one of the conference track co-chairs and had chaired the parallel session 6.

Christopher Heng’s Ph.D. Viva

Congratulations to my Ph.D. student Christopher Heng Yi Sern for passing his Viva with B1 on 22 May 2017.

Visit by MRTC to FAB on 18 May 2017 for collaboration possibility with FAB BIM Team. MRT lines and infrastructures are important for making Klang Valley a sustainable city.
