Background
I have been servicing UTM throughout my tenure as a tutor, lecturer, senior lecturer, Associate Professor and professor since April 2000. I am a Bachelor’s holder in chemical engineering and a Master of Philosophy (Bioprocess Engineering) from UTM in 2000 and 2002. I further studied for a PhD in Environmental Engineering based on analysing the bioconversion process of wastewater (sewage sludge) and received my doctorate in 2010 from UPM. I specialise in environmental biotechnology, focusing on the bioconversion of biomass and waste into value-added products and intermediates, as well as in enzyme immobilisation technology. My research is mainly on biofuel production, i.e. production from wild type yeast, biodiesel from sewage sludge, and biohydrogen from industrial wastewater. This interest is due to Malaysia’s abundant availability of biomass that can be converted into biofuel as renewable energy. At the same time, biomass as a waste can be converted into wealth. The other aspect of biomass utilisation is the production of sugar, oligosaccharides, and mycelium biofoam through the bioconversion process. In addition, I am also working on enzyme technology as well as the utilisation of enzyme or their strategy for hydrolysis of biomass. This area of expertise has been verified professionally through my registration as a Technologist under the ‘Biotechnology’ area in the Malaysia Board of Technology (MBOT). Besides, I specialise also in chemical-bioprocess engineering as professionally registered in ‘Chemical Engineering’ as a professional engineer registered under the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and a Chartered Engineer (CEng) under the UK Engineering Council. I have been working together with Biomolecular and Microbial Process (BIOMIP) research group members in this area of research since 2009.
