Project Title
London Fold;
‘Wheel of Chance’ Open Competition,
London Festival of Architecture, 2012 – Shortlisted.
Competition Description
The ‘London Fold’ was designed based on the London Festival of Architecture cycling theme; ‘The Wheel of Chance’ in celebration of the bicycle and transforming the way people discover London. This new sculptural bike-stand securely stores five bikes in a playful, functional and picturesque way.
The word LONDON was literally chosen to represent its sense of place, making it special and unique. Red is chosen as it is a well-known symbolic color in Britain, especially in London for its iconic designs. Therefore, ‘London Fold’ imagines being a new image in the cycling culture of London – an ‘instagrammable’ stop.
‘London Fold’ uses 12.5mm thick piece of flat steel sheet, stamp or cut into shape and folded to create a structural form. The form is attached to a 50mm thick concrete slab for its ballast with an artificial turf finish to add in a touch of nature.
London Fold was shortlisted among other entries and was exhibited at Grimshaw and Partners design office in London.
