Eid Mubarak 1 Syawal 1439H/17 June 2018

Eid Mubarak …

Alhamdulillah, this year Allah has extended our life, so as to be able to celebrate Hari Raya in 2018. As agreed by all family members, we fulfilled our Eid Pray at Sultan Iskandar Mosque, Bandar Dato Onn. We did Eid pray here three times in a row, which are in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Inspired by a TV program of Ustaz Biker broadcasted by RTM TV1, on the second day of Eid, we went to Hotspring Gersik in Muar, about 2-hour drive from home. After driving through Lebuh Raya Utara-Selatan and exit at Yong Peng, continue to secondary roads, we arrived at Kolam Air Panas Gersik, Muar.

We did not join with others to the pool, as the pool was full and no space available. The pool is too small to accommodate 100 people at once. I estimated only 20-25 people comfortably stay on the pool.

About an hour sitting here and doing nothing, we continue our journey to Kuala Lumpur.

Eid Mubarak all …

River of Life

My family and I visited Klang River right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur on 18 June 2018. My wife took a picture of me and my son. When I observed it, I realized that my son is now taller than his father while three years ago he was half of my height.

The River of Life Project implemented by Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur and Federal Government of Malaysia is an example of integrating urban water resources and urban development. The river beautification project, covers the river stretch around Masjid Jamek and Daya Bumi areas. Situated at the convergence point of the Klang and Gombak rivers, the Blue Pool, is designed to visually transform the rivers into a stunning, sensory experience Kuala Lumpur.

Marhaban ya Ramadhan

My family and I have been 6 times conducting fasting of Ramadhan in Malaysia, which are in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. Ramadhan of this year was a somewhat special, since it closed to the GE-14, the 14th General Election of Malaysia 2018, and witnessed the dramatic change of Government from former Barisan Nasional (BN) party led by Datuk Seri Najib Razak to Pakatan Harapan (PH) party led by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. It was dramatic change because UMNO-led administration has been in office since 1957, and this is the first time UMNO was defeated by oposition Pakatan Harapan.

In 2018, the fasting of Ramadan is in May-June, which is somewhat hot in Malaysia. But, it has no significant influence to the fasting overall. UTM offers a discrete working hour for this Ramadhan, and I have chosen working hour of 7:30-16:00 (Sun-Wed) and 7:30-15:00 (Thursday). The consequence of this selection is I feel sleepy in office for wake-up at 3:00am, and take sahur, Fajar prayer and continue to work at 7:30am. Getting home at 4:30pm continue to be teacher of my son at 5:00pm until iftar at 7:15pm, non-stop.

Anyway, Marhaban ya Ramadhan … I wish you all happy Ramadhan to all muslim readers.

Become Math Teacher at Home

I was not trained as Math teacher. I was good in Math by accident (I have never got less than A for Math, since Form 1-Grade 7 till university student). It ‘was’ because now my rate of brain cells death much faster than cell recovery. It was by accident because I did not like my Math teacher at high school. He was fiery teacher. When I did not like the teacher, in contrary, I must then be good in Math, and eventually I love Math, and my teacher was impressed by my calculus/math/trigonometry capacity, and finally we became a good friend until I left high school.

Now my only son, Form 1/Grade 7 of a school with Cambridge Curriculum, is awful in math. He have never done the exercise on everything including Math. If he was a top performer in the class, it was purely because of his basic capacity with no additional ‘steroids’. Now, I want him to be good in Math with an intensive home schooling on Math, everyday 5-8pm. Like it or not, I am a math teacher now.

I teach him from very basic math to strengthen his foundation on math, then give him tricks on Math to stimulate his ability to do mental arithmetic. He is now progressing well, and his capacity in doing math mentally increases. He can do mentally the calculation like 225:5, 15×17 and the likes.

The work is still progressing …

Watching Rampage – becomes VIP for 2 hours

My wife suggested us to watch a movie starred by Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson, Rampage. Here is the synopsis, I copied from this link:

Global icon Dwayne Johnson headlines the action adventure “Rampage,” directed by Brad Peyton. Johnson stars as primatologist Davis Okoye, a man who keeps people at a distance but shares an unshakable bond with George, the extraordinarily intelligent, incredibly rare albino silverback gorilla who has been in his care since he rescued the young orphan from poachers. But a rogue genetic experiment gone awry mutates this gentle ape into a raging creature of enormous size. To make matters worse, it’s soon discovered there are other similarly altered animals. As these newly created alpha predators tear across North America, destroying everything in their path, Okoye teams with discredited geneticist Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris) to secure an antidote, fighting his way through an ever-changing battlefield, not only to halt a global catastrophe but to save the fearsome creature that was once his friend.

We watched Rampage at Screen Gold Cinema at Paradigm mall. Self-service vending machine served us for getting movie ticket. Since we were the rookie to use this kind of vending machine (we have actually familiar with another kind of ticket vending machine at TGV but not at SGC), what I did just simply select the movie by tapping the screen and showing times were there. The next showing time was 12:45pm (I was in front of the machine on 12:10pm). I chosen three seats, and surprise, the number of seats in the cinema is limited, maybe around 20 (I did not really count it), and it seems to me that the size of seat is jumbo. After selecting the seats, I got surprise further by realizing that the total amount I must pay was RM90 for three tickets, usually RM45-RM50. Oh no wonder no one selected this Prime Cinema. There are 16 cinema halls, and most people went to halls 1-14 but not 16. Entering the hall we were welcomed by Cinema staff with awesome uniform like in Immigration Officer, and we were escorted to a table and wait there until 12:40pm. We purchased a package of popcorn and drinks, and at 12:40pm we entered the cinema hall. Wow, the seat arrangement is really for VIPs.

Then, we become VIP for 2 hours, watching the act of the Rock. Not bad, the movie was full of special effects. Here we are inside the Prime Cinema Hall 2.

Less trash

We found less trash today. Hope no more trash will be found next week, then can peacefully retire from waste picker career 🙂

All awards but Math

My son received many awards for his academic excellence, for example, English subject (several times), Social Studies (many times), Islamic Studies (several times, and for this his teacher called him ustadz), Malay language (two or three times), Science (twice), Computer (twice), and Arts (once). The only he has never received a single award is Math! He is so terrible in math, while his father has never ever got grade on math for less than 9/10.

He received many awards but Math! I am wondering why? When I asked him what do you want to be? He responded that he wanted to be an astronaut, as he was inspired by his first book that I bought for him, which was SPACE. I told him that you must forget to be an astronaut as you are terrible in Math. I told him that mathematics is a fundamental science that affects almost all of our daily life.

As usual, he confronted me with many questions. He said, why do astronaut need math? Why Math is so important in our life, as you said? Do we need math in our daily life? Can we still very much alive without math? and so on and so forth. I answer his question with question first. I told him how can astronaut reach moon without knowing the distance of the moon from earth, the speed of rocket, the gravity that pulls the rocket, and so on. That is about math and physics.

This week with less garbage (at usual place) but …

We have found in this week, Saturday 7 April 2018, the football field with less waste in comparison to the condition in two weeks ago. I do not know and not sure, it was because of increasing awareness (with slim possibility) or less people using the facility (most probably).

Here what we have found …

But in the ditch near Gazebo of UTM football field, we have found plastic bottles, plastic bags, plates, spoons, rotten hat, and broken umbrella. People still considered the ditch as garbage bin. If the ditch can speak, she would be crying for help.

Don’t ask us about the condition in the parking lots next to football field, 10 30-liter plastic bags will be enough to contain all the garbage there. I did not take the pictures there since my mind get distracted. However, we will try to deal with the garbage in this place, before we totally give up.

The visitors, please take care the nature. We hope no more waste from next week and on.

An Inexpensive way to stay healthy

Burning 300 calories can be done in a free-of-charge way. We (my son, wife and I) usually do this way at UTM football field, almost every Saturday morning 7-9am. I will not upload all videos or photos. However here are some of them.

150 calories gone for half an hour doing this

Going around (almost) one Peninsular Malaysia – 2

Take-a-break (this is personal not official part) – Part #2

Checked out from Super 8 Hotel at 8am after taking a breakfast, we went directly to Bukit Kayu Hitam just to cross the Malaysia-Thailand Border to have original Thai Tomyam Gung in Sadao. The travel was relatively easy and we reached the the Border at around 10:30am Malaysia time. We initially thought that crossing border was easy, and in fact, was not easy as we expected. Since we did not plan to bring the car cross-border, we found the car park in a new building at the right-hand side of the road. This is really new, and we were not charged to park the car there. From the car park to Malaysia-side immigration was easy and did not take to much time. It was only about 15 minutes on queue. Then, we walk through the competing road with many cars for about 800 meters away from the Malaysia Immigration.

Compete with Cars but still get chance to a glance pose (300 m away from Thai Border)

Here are the border mark of Malaysia and Thailand.

It reads: Prathet Thai (Thailand)

After reaching the Thai Immigration Area. Then … this is a moment of truth. There were thousands of people to cross the border in that day, we must take a Departure/Arrival Card, filled it, and wait for … about 3 hours! We got the numbers of 1100-1200, while at the moment the calling was 200-300. An Officer calling the people in 100 persons per batch. We were not sure how many people cross the border at Bukit Kayu Hitam per day.

And thus we waited …

Waiting for the call, fortunately as the time was approaching 12:00pm Thai time, the queue was less

We have no problem to wait for hours, but my son has never been so patient for waiting for long time. However, on that day he was so cool not to protest or complaint on the very long hours waiting. And, finally our numbers were called by the Thai Immigration officer to report. The time was already 1:00pm Thailand’s time.
