Release Date:
Join volcano scientists from around the world during scientific meeting and associated public event in Portland.
1,200 scientists from 40 U.S. states and 49 nations are participating in the IAVCEI 2017 Scientific Assembly at the Oregon Convention Center, jointly organized and hosted by Portland State University, the U.S. Geological Survey, Oregon State University, University of Oregon, Central Washington University, and the University of Idaho.
IAVCEI, the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior, represents the interests of individual scientists and scientific organizations that conduct research in volcanology, mitigate volcanic disasters, and conduct research in closely related disciplines.
The conference program will cover the complete range of research interests, from distant volcanoes around the world in Iceland, the Galapagos Islands, Argentina, Chile, Papua New Guinea, Japan, Italy, and Antarctica, and even other planets in the solar system, to the details of the Earth’s interior chemistry, volcanic ash hazards, the use of lidar to study Newberry Volcano in Oregon, under-sea volcanoes, historical eruptions in the 17th century, and a practical understanding of the environmental and societal impacts of eruptions on communities.
Credentialed members of the news media are invited to (1.) attend the IAVCEI 2017 meeting at no cost, but must pre-register by August 10th using instructions below, and (2.) attend a public event at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, associated with the scientific conference, where three internationally renowned scientists will publically share their experiences studying and responding to volcanic eruptions.
