However, their young side conceded a couple of goals and scored a penalty from what was one of the softest decisions you are likely to see.
So, all in all, it was a mixed night. But there was one very real reason for optimism, even for the most pessimistic of Gunners fans – the excellent display of perennial sicknote Jack Wilshere.
