KUALA LUMPUR, March 9 (Bernama) — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today detained a Johor state executive council (exco) member for investigation into alleged corruption and embezzlement of property in the state.

MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Datuk Azam Baki, when contacted, confirmed the arrest.

He said the state exco member was arrested at 11 am at the Johor MACC office after giving his statement on the case.

He said the man was detained for investigation under Section 17 (a) of the MACC Act and also Section 4 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.


In JOHOR BAHRU, the MACC seized 150 handbags of various brands, a Vellfire vehicle and cash totalling RM41,000 following a search on the house of the Exco member here immediately after the arrest was made.

According to a statement from the MACC, the Exco member who was detained to assist investigation on his alleged involvement in real estate issue, would be remanded at the Sessions Court tomorrow morning.

Earlier this morning, in the same case, four of the seven arrested, comprising the son and a special aide of a Johor state government official, were released on MACC bail while three other individuals were also released on MACC bail on March 3 and 7.

On Feb 24, the MACC detained six men after they were believed to be involved in corrupt practices and embezzlement of property in Johor.

On Feb 28, the MACC detained another contractor believed to be the seventh suspect in the case.

Subsequently, the State Exco concerned applied for leave from state government duty effective March 1 until the investigation on the case had completed.
