MELAKA, March 3 (Bernama) — Yang di- Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V today opened the Sultan Muhammad V Mosque at the Sungai Udang Prison Complex here.

Sultan Muhammad V was greeted upon arrival there at 1.10pm by Melaka Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob and Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron.

About 2,000 people had gathered to welcome Sultan Muhammad V who signed a plaque and joined the worshippers for the Friday prayers. The prayers were led by Melaka Mufti Datuk Abdul Halim Tawil.

After the prayers, His Majesty attended a reception with the people.

The prison complex and mosque, built at a cost of RM305 million, were completed on Feb 25, 2010.

The mosque, built on the modern contemporary concept, can accommodate 2,000 worshippers at any one time.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who is on a three-day maiden visit to Melaka up to tomorrow, is scheduled to attend a state banquet at a leading hotel here tonight.
