‘Offside goals don’t count’ – Arsenal fans delight as FIFA ‘end’ Giroud v Mkhitaryan debate
The debate between Arsenal and Manchester United fans will linger on forever, but have FIFA just weighed in with a definitive answer?
Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud and United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan both produced stunning scorpion-kick goals last season, but only one made FIFA’s Puskas Award shortlist for best golazo.
Cue delight from Arsenal fans when they discover it was Giroud who made the cut, and the ‘offside’ Mkhi effort did not…
Because Giroud’s is 10x better than Mkhitaryan. The build up play –> the backheel –> crossbar in https://t.co/09ak9gGmLO

Mkhi did it first, but he was offside. Giroud started the play & his finish was more aesthetically pleasing. Goal of the season

Mkhitaryan’s offside calf slice from 5 yards not nominated for that award is it?

If you really think Mkhi goal was better than Giroud you are ridiculous. Get over your United bias.

Amazing how the offside scorpion kick by Mkhitaryan was not nominated but the “donkey kick” from Giroud was pic.twitter.com/kghQK6ufiu

No offside goals are not nominated. So obviously Mkhitaryan’s goal’s nowhere to be found. https://t.co/XuicM6gAOP

Giroud > Everyone

So this means that Giroud’s scorpion kick was better than Mkhi’s? https://t.co/hIlJwrukpI

Giroud’s goal was better, not offside and was in 2017. Mkhitaryan’s meanwhile… https://t.co/kIEsMXj3g5

Team Mkhi weighed in too…
Trying to work out why Giroud’s name is on the #PuskasAward shortlist and yours is not pic.twitter.com/KPkSM6uuje

If they found space for Giroud’s ‘scorpion’ (I assume) on the Puskas Award, then it’s a joke leaving Mkhi’s out. Just give it 2Mkhi already

Imagine Giroud’s goal being considered and not Mkhi’s https://t.co/HLmePZNmXs

I’m not having it even more that mkhitaryan’s scorpion kick didn’t make it ahead of Giroud’s. https://t.co/sMKXOJNiCH

And it’s a public poll you say? Just give the award to Giroud now, we all know what Arsenal fans are like…
Just realised the Puskas Award is decided by a public vote. Congratulations, Olivier Giroud, on winning the FIFA Puskas Award 2017.

Is the Puskas Award still done by public poll? I’ll go to uni and vote on every computer. I will die in my mission to get Giroud to win it.

And for your delight, here are all goals nominated for the Puskas Award…
