{"id":328397,"date":"2016-12-18T03:41:40","date_gmt":"2016-12-17T19:41:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/?p=1425194"},"modified":"2016-12-18T03:41:40","modified_gmt":"2016-12-17T19:41:40","slug":"hps-omen-x-is-a-powerful-and-mostly-satisfying-gaming-cube","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/people.utm.my\/asmawisham\/hps-omen-x-is-a-powerful-and-mostly-satisfying-gaming-cube\/","title":{"rendered":"HP\u2019s OMEN X is a powerful and mostly satisfying gaming cube"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/l1000099.jpg?w=738\" class=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"first\">A<\/p>\n<p>Maingear and HP collaboration, the OMEN X is a good example of how far a consumer computer manufacturer will go to try and cater to a hard to please niche like PC gamers.<\/p>\n<p>Recently the latter\u00a0has been doing a great\u00a0job of appealing to different user needs with their Spectre line, from premium ultrabooks, to the VR-ready desktop replacement OMEN 17 laptop <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2016\/10\/19\/hps-omen-17-is-an-epic-gaming-laptop-that-needs-just-a-tweak-or-two\/\">that I reviewed earlier this winter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To better cater to hardcore gamers, HP teamed up with Maingear, a custom PC builder that\u2019s well-respected in the gaming community. In fact, HP and Maingear are so confident in the OMEN X\u2019s chassis design that you can actually purchase it as an empty case\u00a0for $599. The\u00a0specs of your new machine would then be entirely up to you; want to include two GPUs and four separate hard drives? Not a problem at all.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1429577\" src=\"https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/l1000105.jpg?w=928&#038;h=619\" alt=\"l1000105\" width=\"928\" height=\"619\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/l1000105.jpg 928w, https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/l1000105.jpg?w=150&#038;h=100 150w, https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/l1000105.jpg?w=300&#038;h=200 300w, https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/l1000105.jpg?w=768&#038;h=512 768w, https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/l1000105.jpg?w=680&#038;h=454 680w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 928px) 100vw, 928px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Inside of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/store.hp.com\/us\/en\/mdp\/towers-349501--1\/hp-omen-x-900-gaming-desktop-pc-412003--1#!&#038;Tab=vao\">HP\u2019s $2,149 build<\/a>, you\u2019ll find a 4.0GHz Core i7-6700HK quad-core processor, 16GB DDR4 RAM and a GTX 1080 Founder\u2019s Edition graphics card \u2014 a powerful trio that can handle any game\u00a0that is based off DirectX 11 or 12 released\u00a0this year \u2014 and most likely for a while longer. A 2TB traditional hard drive with 256GB SSD, Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11ac WiFi and a 1300W Gold efficiency\u00a0power supply round off the rest of the specs.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of real-world performance, every title I\u2019ve played has been pushed to a 3440 x 1440 curved LG monitor via a Displayport. For PC gaming purists who swear by 1080p HD displays, the frame rates I\u2019ve seen of course will be higher.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1429583\" src=\"https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/l1000120.jpg?w=928&#038;h=619\" alt=\"l1000120\" width=\"928\" height=\"619\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/l1000120.jpg 928w, https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/l1000120.jpg?w=150&#038;h=100 150w, https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/l1000120.jpg?w=300&#038;h=200 300w, https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/l1000120.jpg?w=768&#038;h=512 768w, https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/l1000120.jpg?w=680&#038;h=454 680w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 928px) 100vw, 928px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><em>Battlefield 1<\/em> runs at a cozy 75fps on max settings, DirectX 12 enabled. <em>Arma III<\/em>\u00a0maxed-out at a strong 70fps, while <em>Rainbow Six: Siege<\/em> averages 60 to 80fps, also with max settings and V-sync enabled. Using a G-Sync screen with this system would most likely produce better results, but unfortunately I didn\u2019t have one to test.<\/p>\n<div class=\"writerquote-wrap right pullquote-right\" readability=\"7\">\n<blockquote class=\"writerquote\" readability=\"7\">\n<p>The GTX 1080 is worth the investment, while the TITAN X is not at all a requirement if you want to play today\u2019s (or tomorrow\u2019s) games on the highest settings on a 1080p or 1440p monitor.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>An NVIDIA\u00a0GTX 1080\u2019s performance, pitted against other Pascal NVIDIA graphics processor is uncontested, unless you opt for the\u00a0astronomically expensive TITAN X GPU ($1,200). Pitted against the slower GTX 1070 (both desktop and mobile versions) and you\u2019ll see frame rates drop by 10-20fps. The GTX 1080 is\u00a0worth the investment, while the TITAN X is not at all a requirement if you want to play today\u2019s (or tomorrow\u2019s) games on the highest settings on a 1080p or 1440p monitor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1429579\" src=\"https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/l1000109.jpg?w=928&#038;h=619\" alt=\"l1000109\" width=\"928\" height=\"619\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/l1000109.jpg 928w, https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/l1000109.jpg?w=150&#038;h=100 150w, https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/l1000109.jpg?w=300&#038;h=200 300w, https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/l1000109.jpg?w=768&#038;h=512 768w, https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/l1000109.jpg?w=680&#038;h=454 680w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 928px) 100vw, 928px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Strangely, three\u00a0weeks into\u00a0using the OMEN X, a reliability issue came up: it wouldn\u2019t get past the POST screen (power-on self test), which is the\u00a0bane of any computer user\u2019s\u00a0existence. Afterwards, I\u2019d fill it with similar specs and a better motherboard, while sacrificing storage space for a faster, but smaller SSD.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, if you\u2019re satisfied with the pre-configured builds and pricing\u00a0that HP is offering, then make that your choice.
