<\/span>KUCHING, Feb 1 (Bernama) — Sarawak Barisan Nasional has chosen Puan Sri Jamilah Anu, the widow of former Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem, as its candidate for the Tanjong Datu by-election.<\/p>\n

Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, who is also Sarawak BN chairman and Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) president, announced this after chairing a special meeting on the by-election at PPB’s headquarters in Jalan Bako here today.<\/p>\n

“I have discussed the candidacy with the PBB and BN leadership. Our (Sarawak BN) candidate for the Tanjung Datu by-election is Puan Sri Jamilah Anu, the widow of the incumbent,” he said.<\/p>\n

Asked if Jamilah had been informed on her candidacy, Abang Johari said: “We all have indicated to her and she has also indicated her willingness to be the candidate.”<\/p>\n

He said Jamilah as the wife of Adenan had faithfully discharged the duties entrusted to her during his career as Member of Parliament, assemblyman and Chief Minister.<\/p>\n

“Jamilah is also well-known among the leaders and people of Tanjung Datu who are made up of various races with different religions and they will accept this nomination from PBB.<\/p>\n

“I am confident that just as they supported Tok Nan (Adenan), they will extend the same support to Jamilah,” he said, adding that her candidacy was supported by all Sarawak BN component parties.<\/p>\n

“All the components parties are in support of Jamilah as our candidate. And it has also been agreed by the chairman of BN Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak,” he said.<\/p>\n

Asked if Jamilah, 61, would spearhead the campaign as she is still in the “edah” (mourning) period, Abang Johari said this would be handled by Sarawak BN.<\/p>\n

“Campaign? We will do the campaigning for Jamilah but Jamilah will be there to present the nomination papers. After that she will not be around, we will do the work,” he said.<\/p>\n

Asked further if Sarawak BN would be introducing a new manifesto in the wake of the by-election, Abang Johari said the coalition would continue with Adenan’s plans and unveil the manifesto after nomination.<\/p>\n

Adenan died from heart complications on Jan 11, just two weeks shy of his 73rd birthday.<\/p>\n

Nomination and polling have been set for Feb 4 and Feb 18 respectively.<\/p>\n

In the last state election held on May 11 last year, Adenan polled 6,360 votes to thrash his challenger Jazolkipli Numan of PKR by a majority of 5,892 votes.<\/p>\n

Adenan and Jamilah were blessed with two children – Aziza and Azizul Anuar.<\/p>\n

She is also the patron of Persatuan Puteri Islam Malaysia, Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Terencat Akal (PERKATA), Persatuan Pengasuh & Pendidikan Awal Kanak-Kanak Sarawak, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Sarawak Heart Foundation and former president of the Association of Wives of Ministers and Assistant Ministers of Sarawak (SABATI).<\/p>\n

For her contributions, she was honoured with the Pegawai Bintang Sarawak (PBS), Panglima Setia Bintang Sarawak (PSBS), Pingat Peringatan Delima (PPD), Pingat Bakti Emas (PBE) and Datuk Amar Bintang Kenyalang medals and awards.<\/p>\n
