But it never said how much those sponsors paid per visitor delivered by the game.<\/p>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\">But in an interview published yesterday by Brazil\u2019s Globo newspaper, Niantic VP of strategic partnerships Mathieu de Fayet said (translated), \u201cThe idea is to offer players items at certain locations, and partners pay $0.15 for each visitor attracted to the game. And we\u2019ve already attracted 500 million visitors. In Japan [at the game\u2019s peak last summer], each activated McDonald\u2019s store attracted 2,000 visitors a day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, we followed up with Niantic, and a spokesperson claimed that $0.15 number is incorrect, possibly due to a translation error. The company says \u201cNiantic\u2019s cost per visit (CPV) model visit has partners spending less than $.50 \/ daily unique visit to sponsored locations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At $0.15 per visit the math would indicate that\u00a0the sponsorships could have racked up $75 million in revenue for Niantic, while the high bound of $0.50 would have generated $250 million.<\/p>\n<p>Given that\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2016\/07\/21\/pokemon-go-is-finally-available-in-japan\/\" rel=\"noopener\">McDonald\u2019s Japan activated 3,000 stores<\/a> in the country, that price would mean that at the game\u2019s peak, the fast-food giant would have paid out roughly $900,000 per day to Niantic for the Pok\u00e9mon GO sponsorship at $0.15 per visitor, or $3 million per day at $0.50 each.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1497172\" src=\"https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/05\/starbucks_pokestop_gym.png?w=680&amp;h=357\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/05\/starbucks_pokestop_gym.png?w=680&amp;h=357 680w, https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/05\/starbucks_pokestop_gym.png?w=150&amp;h=79 150w, https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/05\/starbucks_pokestop_gym.png?w=300&amp;h=158 300w, https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/05\/starbucks_pokestop_gym.png?w=768&amp;h=403 768w, https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/05\/starbucks_pokestop_gym.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The sponsorships turn these locations into Pok\u00e9mon GO \u201cgyms\u201d that players can win for their team through virtual battle, and \u201cPok\u00e9Stops\u201d where they can gather eggs and Pok\u00e9 Balls to capture more pocket monsters.<\/p>\n<p>Pok\u00e9mon GO has since signed on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2016\/12\/08\/pokemon-go-is-officially-teaming-with-starbucks-for-7800-new-gyms-and-pokestops\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Sprint and 7,800 Starbucks locations as sponsors<\/a> in the U.S., both of which are hoping to boost in-store foot traffic from the teen and young adult demographics addicted to the augmented reality game.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1327912\" src=\"https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/05\/pokemongo3.png?w=300&amp;h=515\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"515\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/05\/pokemongo3.png?w=300&amp;h=515 300w, https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/05\/pokemongo3.png?w=600&amp;h=1030 600w, https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/05\/pokemongo3.png?w=87&amp;h=150 87w, https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/05\/pokemongo3.png?w=175&amp;h=300 175w, https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/05\/pokemongo3.png?w=397&amp;h=680 397w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"\/>Only a fraction of the cash trickles down to Nintendo. Niantic pays a licensing fee to the Pok\u00e9mon Company, in which <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/740897\/nintendo-investors-have-realized-theyll-only-see-a-fraction-of-pokemon-gos-profits\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Nintendo owns a 32 percent voting stake<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But if the deals prove successful for the sponsors, they could forge a path for other apps looking to monetize by delivering foot traffic to brick-and-mortar businesses. Companies like Yelp struggle to quantify the sales they drive to restaurants and other stores. Even if people discover or choose a place to go on Yelp, there\u2019s no geofenced trigger they pull back in the app when they arrive to confirm that\u2019s how they got there.<\/p>\n<p>Pok\u00e9mon GO benefits from building demand for its free-to-produce virtual goods, which users claim when they arrive at a sponsor\u2019s business. That lets sponsors pay under $0.50 per visitor. Other apps would need to build similar demand for something that costs nothing to give away, or be forced to distribute discount coupons or other incentives that could balloon the sponsorship price beyond the potential return on investment.<\/p>\n<p>Yelpers\u00a0or other app users might not be willing to trek to a certain business and then go through the chore of redeeming the prize upon arrival if all they get is a badge or sticker.
