Hillary Clinton appeared on stage at Code Conference on Wednesday in Rancho Palos Verdes, California and reflected on why she lost the U.S. 2016 presidential election.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, the widespread coverage of her unsecured email usage was a sour point. The \u201cemail account was turned into the biggest scandal since Lord knows when.\u201d She griped that the \u201cmainstream media covered that like Pearl Harbor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She also felt that former FBI director James Comey had a lot to do with the perception that she was a criminal. \u201cComey was more than happy to talk about my emails, but he wouldn\u2019t talk about investigations with Russians,\u201d said Clinton. \u201cWe thought we were going to win. The Comey letter was measurable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Social media played a larger role than ever in the 2016 election and Clinton had some thoughts about Twitter and Facebook.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe vast majority of the news items posted were fake,\u201d she said about Facebook. \u201cThe other side was using content that was just flat out false and delivering it in a very personalized way\u2026\u00a0<\/span>That really influenced the information that people were relying on.\u201d
<\/span><\/p>\n

Lately she\u2019s been wondering why millions of bots are following Trump on Twitter. Is that \u201cto make him look more popular than he is?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She also had some quips about his \u201ccovfefe\u201d tweet, the misspelling that shook the internet Tuesday night. \u00a0\u201cI thought it was a hidden message to the Russians,\u201d she joked. But this tweet and others, she said could be a distraction. \u201cMaybe for a minute you\u2019ll forget about the latest accusations\u201d regarding Russia and healthcare.<\/span><\/p>\n

Clinton also spoke about the role that data played in \u201cweaponizing\u201d information on social media and other online platforms. She talked about how the RNC built a giant data drove after the loss of the 2012 presidential election.<\/span><\/p>\n

She accused the RNC of using that data to work with the Russians and the makers of fake news to create a targeted and effective approach. \u201cThe marriage of the domestic fake news operations, the domestic RNC Republican allied data, combined with the very effective capabilities that the Russians brought\u201d was a perfect storm.<\/span><\/p>\n

She\u2019s also in favor of tech billionaires buying more newspapers, like Jeff Bezos did with the Washington Post. \u201cJeff Bezos saved the Washington Post,\u201d she said. It was a \u201cv<\/span>ery good use of his financial resources because now we have a very good newspaper again.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Newspapers still \u201cdrive news online, drive news on TV.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
