The first happens during all types of explosive\u00a0eruptions, because there are always ash particles colliding with each other, especially close to a volcano\u2019s vent. However, \u201cice charging\u201d only occurs\u00a0when the ash plume reaches high into the freezing-cold parts of the atmosphere.
