{"id":387879,"date":"2017-08-21T20:59:41","date_gmt":"2017-08-21T12:59:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2017\/08\/21\/apple-pay-usage-forecast-juniper-research\/"},"modified":"2017-08-21T20:59:41","modified_gmt":"2017-08-21T12:59:41","slug":"apple-pay-usage-estimated-to-rise-sharply-in-united-states-due-to-frustration-with-slow-chip-and-pin-cards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/people.utm.my\/asmawisham\/apple-pay-usage-estimated-to-rise-sharply-in-united-states-due-to-frustration-with-slow-chip-and-pin-cards\/","title":{"rendered":"Apple Pay Usage Estimated to Rise Sharply in United States Due to Frustration With Slow Chip-and-PIN Cards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contactless payment methods like Apple Pay will rise sharply in the United States, from less than 2 percent of transactions this year to 34 percent by 2022, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.juniperresearch.com\/press\/press-releases\/contactless-account-more-than-1-in-2-pos-trans\">new report<\/a> shared by research firm Juniper Research.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.macrumors.com\/article-new\/2017\/08\/chip-and-pin-terminal.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-582840\"\/><\/p>\n<p><center><em>Payment terminal with chip-and-PIN card support via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldpay.com\/uk\/sme\/face-face\/card-machines\/countertop-card-machines\">Worldpay<\/a><\/em><\/center><br \/>Juniper Research argued that customer dissatisfaction at the slower speeds of chip card transactions, like chip-and-signature or chip-and-PIN, will further increase the adoption of smartphone-based payments, an area currently dominated by Apple Pay.<\/p>\n<p>The transition towards contactless payments, and even the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/EMV\">EMV standard<\/a> that chip-and-PIN cards are based on, has been much slower in the United States compared to many other countries around the world.<\/p>\n<p>In Canada, for example, chip-and-PIN cards have been common for over five years, while at least 80 percent of Canadian retailers are now accepting contactless payments, according to payment processor MONEXgroup.<\/p>\n<p>Juniper Research expects the United States to follow a similar growth curve as Europe, where EMV and contactless payments are also widespread.<\/p>\n<p>Apple CEO Tim Cook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2017\/08\/01\/apple-q3-2017-earnings-call-transcript\/\">recently confirmed<\/a> Apple Pay momentum is &#8220;strongest in international markets,&#8221; where he said the infrastructure for mobile payments has developed faster than in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Cook added that three out of four Apple Pay transactions happen outside of the U.S., where the service first launched in October 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Apple Pay will support <a href=\"https:\/\/venmo.com\/\">Venmo<\/a>-like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2017\/06\/05\/apple-pay-person-payments\/\">peer-to-peer payments in the Messages app<\/a> on iOS 11, starting in the United States.
