This breach\u00a0included Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and, in some instances, driver license numbers. As though that weren\u2019t bad enough, 209,000 people had their credit card info leaked, and the breach also included dispute documents with personally identifying information from 182,000 consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Following the report, the company came under fire for its response, which was both lackadaisical and callous. The website that the company set up to assist consumers was at best <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/09\/07\/equifax-data-breach-help-site-leaves-consumers-with-more-questions-than-answers\/\" rel=\"noopener\">broken<\/a> and at worst, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/09\/08\/psa-no-matter-what-you-write-equifax-may-tell-you-youve-been-impacted-by-the-hack\/\" rel=\"noopener\">a scam<\/a>. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/09\/07\/i-called-equifax-to-find-out-if-id-been-affected-but-it-just-hung-up-on-me-three-times\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Phone calls<\/a> to the company followed the same trend, and, since then, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/09\/12\/congress-demands-answers-from-equifax\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Congress is reportedly<\/a> looking into the issue.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/tag\/equifax-hack\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/09\/eq-uifax-hack-banner.png\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Equifax reported last week a leak on July 29 that compromised the data of 143 million Americans.
