It now makes up about a tenth of the global power mix, reaching close to the same amount of energy generated by nuclear power plants.<\/p>\n<p id=\"AeLMP3\">Those carbon-free sources of power are steadily replacing coal. Coal generation dropped a record-breaking 8.3 percent in the first half of 2020, compared to the same period in 2019. The rise of wind and solar contributed to 30 percent of that drop in coal, according to Ember, while the majority of the decline was due to the COVID-19 pandemic forcing down power demand.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-float-right\">\n<aside id=\"XRmLsG\"><q>THE UK AND EU ARE IN THE LEAD<\/q><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"JBpq9u\">\u201cCountries across the world are now on the same path \u2013 building wind turbines and solar panels to replace electricity from coal and gas-fired power plants,\u201d Dave Jones, senior electricity analyst at Ember, said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ember-climate.org\/project\/global-electricity-h12020\/\">statement<\/a>. Ember\u2019s analysis includes 48 countries that make up 83 percent of the world\u2019s global electricity production.<\/p>\n<p id=\"Lh3Uxt\">The UK and EU are in the lead when it comes to how much of their electricity is powered by wind and solar. It now accounts for 42 percent of the power mix in Germany, 33 percent in the UK, and 21 percent across the EU.<\/p>\n<div class=\"m-ad m-ad__dynamic_ad_unit mb-3 m-ad__desktop_article_body_failsafe dfp_ad-wrapper--is-filled\" data-concert-ads-name=\"desktop_article_body_failsafe\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-desktop_article_body_failsafe\" class=\"dynamic-js-slot dfp_ad--rendered dfp_ad--is-filled\" data-google-query-id=\"CK7LwYmokuwCFUmMjwodOrwI2Q\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/172968584\/verge_16__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"Fk2HJT\">That\u2019s a way bigger proportion of renewable energy compared to the current top three carbon polluters in the world: China, the US, and India. Wind and solar powered about a tenth of electricity in China and India. China is now responsible for more than half of all the world\u2019s coal power generation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-float-left\">\n<aside id=\"xZ2YmP\"><q>THERE\u2019S STILL A LONG WAY TO GO<\/q><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"NrsS4q\">The US gets 12 percent of its power from wind and solar. Renewables and nuclear are set to surpass coal as a share of the US electricity mix in 2020,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-electricity-outlook\/u-s-power-use-to-drop-over-3-in-2020-due-coronavirus-eia-idUSKCN2572GF?utm_campaign=Carbon%20Brief%20Daily%20Briefing&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=Revue%20newsletter\"><em>Reuters<\/em>\u00a0reports<\/a>. Renewables will be the fastest-growing source of electricity generation this year, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/outlooks\/steo\/\">forecast<\/a>\u00a0released earlier this week by the US Energy Information Administration.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/6\/26\/18759933\/usa-coal-power-natural-gas-renewables\">In April 2019<\/a>, the total amount of renewable power generated in the US beat out coal for the first time, contributing to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=43895\">record-setting year for renewables<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"zGO2mR\">This is all encouraging progress toward cutting down fossil fuel use in order to limit the devastating effects of climate change. But there\u2019s still a long way to go to reach the goal set in the 2015 Paris climate agreement of stopping the planet from heating up more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. To hit that target, coal needs to drop 13 percent every year over the next 10 years, and carbon dioxide emissions need to essentially disappear by 2050.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yu1SfD\">\u201cThe fact that, during a global pandemic, coal generation has still only fallen by 8% shows just how far off-track we still are,\u201d Jones said. \u201cWe have the solution, it\u2019s working, it\u2019s just not
