{"id":1689,"date":"2017-08-20T11:53:16","date_gmt":"2017-08-20T03:53:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/people.utm.my\/azlans\/?p=1689"},"modified":"2017-08-20T11:53:16","modified_gmt":"2017-08-20T03:53:16","slug":"promoting-service-learning-as-one-of-utm-new-academia-learning-innovations-nali-at-ho-chi-minh-city-vietnam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/people.utm.my\/azlans\/promoting-service-learning-as-one-of-utm-new-academia-learning-innovations-nali-at-ho-chi-minh-city-vietnam\/","title":{"rendered":"Promoting Service Learning as one of UTM New Academia Learning Innovations (NALI) at Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\">\n<h1 class=\"entry-title\"><\/h1>\n<p class=\"entry-meta\">May 28, 2017\u00a0by\u00a0<span class=\"entry-author\"><a class=\"entry-author-link\" href=\"http:\/\/news.utm.my\/author\/p-halim\/\" rel=\"author\"><span class=\"entry-author-name\">Abdul Halim Abdullah<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>JOHOR BAHRU, 28 May 2017 \u2013 Head Department of Educational Foundations and Social Science, Faculty of Education, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Dr Mahani Mokhtar was invited to deliver a keynote at the \u201cLanguage Learning and Teaching Today 2017\u201d conference organised by the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27095\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-27095\" src=\"http:\/\/news.utm.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/photo4-551x413.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"551\" height=\"413\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr Mahani delivering a keynote.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The conference was held on 23 May 2017 and it was one of the events to commemorate the university\u2019s 10th anniversary celebration.<\/p>\n<p>This annual conference is aimed at exploring crucial issues of teaching and learning English language for the sustainable development of the community in the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p>The conference particularly featured talks and discussions on service teaching approach, teaching practices of academic English, promotions of intercultural communicative competence, and teaching techniques of English for Specific Purposes in the context of higher education.<\/p>\n<p>Three other invited speakers were academicians from other universities in Vietnam who presented their most significant research related to the themes of the conference. The title of Dr Mahani\u2019s presentation was \u201cEnhancing 21st century skills among TESL graduates in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) through Service Learning program\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>As one of the facilitators for UTM NALI Service Learning approach in UTM, the presentation gave the opportunity for Dr Mahani to share insights on how Service Learning is implemented at Faculty of Education and the advantages of it in terms of developing and nurturing 21st century skills among TESL students.<\/p>\n<p>After the presentation, Dr Mahani received positive feedback from conference participants who wanted to know more about how Service Learning is adopted as a teaching and learning approach at universities since it is a new concept in Vietnam.
