Original message &#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<br \/>\nFrom:\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Azman<\/span>\u00a0Hassan\u00a0<u><\/u><br \/>\nDate:07\/07\/2014 7:58 PM (GMT+08:00)<br \/>\nTo:\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:RMC-RND-NET@GROUPS.UTM.MY\" target=\"_blank\">RMC-RND-NET@GROUPS.UTM.MY<\/a><br \/>\nSubject: How to Increase Citations of Your Scientific Articles<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">How to Increase Citations of Your Scientific Articles<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Posted on\u00a0<a title=\"11:53 pm\" href=\"http:\/\/thescientistvideographer.com\/wordpress\/how-to-increase-citations-of-your-scientific-articles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"bookmark\">September 11, 2012<\/a><\/div>\n<p>We\u2019re talking about science communication and motivations for scientists to reach a broader audience.\u00a0 By a broader audience, I\u2019m talking about scientists outside your field,\u00a0 resource managers (who are often biologists, but do not typically read the scientific literature), students (K-12, undergraduate, graduate), the media, policy-makers, and the general public.\u00a0 In the last post, I explained how a proven record of communicating science to a diverse audience is essential to meeting funding agency requirements (e.g., the Broader Impacts criterion required for proposals to the National Science Foundation).<\/p>\n<p>In this post, I\u2019d like to provide another incentive:\u00a0 getting more citations and recognition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thescientistvideographer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/googlescholar_citation_cropped.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"CToWUd\" title=\"Example of Google Citation Indices\" src=\"https:\/\/ci6.googleusercontent.com\/proxy\/xy4DYBU8LkK75eth0mzlJohvXaO61kjGycln9QQWsc9-l-c7RNfzAlTmfV6SMwZB6vDbZRfQ03JEJRmEmEibP4CzRy6loO8L0pUbE1uqYIyCWkB7nYaUON5Gzwho3_9EPlJqDyju32NTxc3ZkzreC0FPbATms-Cg_VaXDAyyno8X=s0-d-e1-ft#http:\/\/thescientistvideographer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/googlescholar_citation_cropped.jpg\" alt=\"google scholar citations\" width=\"697\" height=\"112\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Most scientists are evaluated based on their publications and more specifically on the numbers of citations their publications receive.\u00a0 One can argue that such indices are flawed and are not a good way to judge someone but the fact is that search committees and promotion review panels routinely examine the citation record and h-index of candidates.\u00a0 If you have published a number of papers but they\u2019ve not been cited (except by you and other co-authors), then the conclusion will be that your work is not making an impact on the field.\u00a0 On the other hand, if your papers have been cited hundreds of times by scientists working in diverse fields, then your work is clearly of general importance to science.\u00a0 Guess which outcome is going to put you at the top of the list of candidates or ensure your promotion?<\/p>\n<p>This type of information can be acquired by examining the citation record, typically in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thomsonreuters.com\/products_services\/science\/science_products\/a-z\/science_citation_index\/\" target=\"_blank\">Thompson Reuters Science Citation Index<\/a>\u00a0(available online through the Web of Science).\u00a0 Another growing data source for citation analysis is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Google Scholar<\/a>\u00a0(in case you haven\u2019t checked this out, GS citations does an excellent job of accurately compiling your citations).\u00a0 The h-index is a measure of both number of publications and number of citations.\u00a0 The\u00a0<i>h<\/i>\u00a0in the h-index means that a scientist has published\u00a0<i>h<\/i>\u00a0papers, each of which has been cited in other papers at least\u00a0<i>h<\/i>\u00a0times.\u00a0<b>\u00a0By the way, if you don\u2019t have a clue about how many times your publications have been cited or what your h-index is, that\u2019s like a student who doesn\u2019t know their GPA (grade point average).\u00a0 Without such information, you will not know how you stack up against your competition or whether you need to step up your game.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Bottom line\u2026citations are important.\u00a0 If people are unaware of your work, they won\u2019t be citing it.<\/b>\u00a0 The more students and scientists in other fields who have heard of your research, the more citations you will get.\u00a0 This is where science communication comes in.\u00a0 A graduate student, for example, may be writing their first paper or research prospectus about a very specific topic but is looking for more general information to set the background for the study.\u00a0 They will do a typical literature search but will likely also search on Google, especially if they cannot find a scholarly paper that provides the type of basic information they need to put their work into a broader context. Such information was only available in books when I was a graduate student, and I had to trek to the library and search the stacks for a good basic description of a habitat or a species, which simply was not available in single research articles (and even if it was, it was not written in everyday language that I could comprehend).\u00a0 Nowadays, this type of basic information is everywhere on the internet, and students, in particular, are likely to search for it on the Web.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at an example of how a non-technical communication product about a research effort can lead people to your technical articles, which they then will be more likely to cite in their technical paper.<\/p>\n<p>First, I\u2019ll use a text-based communication example.\u00a0 Government agencies routinely produce science communication products geared toward general audiences.\u00a0 The agency I worked for uses \u201cfact sheets\u201d to summarize information about a science topic or a recent research finding\u2026.written in everyday language.\u00a0 I wrote several of these fact sheets, which turned out to be much more popular than any of my technical publications.
