Personal leadership development plan based on the Four Pillars of self-leadership.
Areas I am excel and areas for improvement.
Knowing Who I am
As a lecturer of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), I have multiple responsibilities involving 7Ps matter, which are teaching, supervising, researching, writing and publishing, consulting, commercialising and professional service (7P – pengajaran, penyeliaan, penyelidikan, penulisan dan penerbitan, perundingan, pengkomersilan dan khidmat profesional). Hence, my roles in UTM are not limited to a teacher, an educator, a ‘parent’, a counsellor to students, but I am also an inventor, a researcher, a writer, a consultant, an entrepreneur and also a service provider to communities. My ultimate goal is to serve for the benefit of mankind, university and country by becoming excel in each of the 7Ps. My short-term goals are to gain my knowledge and strengthen/ learn new skills related to all 7Ps, especially the new field which are consultation, commercialisation and professional community service. My long term-goals are to be one of the top management of UTM, to produce commercialise medical devices for helping health communities, which then leads to the spin-off company start-up. It is hope a that the startup spin-off company would indirectly provide more job opportunities to the graduated students.
Knowing What I Do
I always believe that everything starts from inside before shining out to the outside. As a quote by the late Steve Jobs saying, “The only way to do great job is to love what you do”. This is my dream job (to be a lecturer). The behaviours that I must possess to this my-love-job are being presentable and enjoy with the tasks that are associated to the 7P, have high ethics, integrity, and professionalism, as well as be humble and transparent to the stakeholders (e.g.: student, parents, communities). I believe that all of these behaviours (the mentioned above) is long-learning process shaping my self-leadership. I am so motivated to see the high education in Malaysia is in high standard, which then produces graduated students with high in the combinations of high intelligent quotient (IQ), emotional quotient (EQ) and spiritual quotient (SQ). Seeing my students become a successful engineer that able to raise their families’ standard of living become my motivations to be a lecturer.
Knowing What I Need to Learn
To achieve my goals, I need to excel in both hard-skills as well as soft-skills. For the hard-skills, I must really good in teaching, supervising, writing journal/grants, pitching, negotiating, business and marketing (all related to the 7Ps). UTM has prepared the platforms for lecturers to learn those skills and get advices from the experts (such as CDex for teaching, ICC for commercialisation, etc.), hence, I must grab this opportunity to use them. I need to improve all skills in7Ps. Meanwhile, for the soft-skills including public speaking, team work, leadership, time-management, problem-solving and critical thinking, I am continuously learning them from my experiences, my mistakes and my mentor. I also have joint the UTM Toastmasters Club to sharpen by public speaking and communication skills. In a good health condition is also a must, so I eat healthy foods and do routine exercises.
Using What I Know
To fulfil the dreams, I have started building myself with a successful-like-minded people, which include consistent and persistent in whatever tasks I am doing, looking at positive sides in every situations, love and passion of what I am doing, and also feel happy to help and add values to the people. I am must also surrounded myself with the people who have similar thinking like me in order to move forward and to success, in the name of Allah.
