{"id":1743,"date":"2019-06-24T07:56:50","date_gmt":"2019-06-23T23:56:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/people.utm.my\/hadijahjaffri\/?p=1743"},"modified":"2019-06-25T12:42:40","modified_gmt":"2019-06-25T04:42:40","slug":"cerf-oh-cerf-what-are-thou","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/people.utm.my\/hadijahjaffri\/cerf-oh-cerf-what-are-thou\/","title":{"rendered":"Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CERF)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>What is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sistemguruonline.my\/2018\/01\/apa-itu-cefr-common-european-framework-reference.html\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> CERF<\/span>?<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong> It refers to <a href=\"https:\/\/people.utm.my\/hadijahjaffri\/poems-that-i-have-to-teach-during-latihan-ikhtisas-and-after\/\">Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.<\/a>\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got it right!\u00a0 It is a European Framework that somehow as Asians, we have to follow.\u00a0 Ironic, isn&#8217;t it?\u00a0 Nevertheless, with that as reference and guidance, we change our curriculum i.e. in specific the English subject when we started <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utusan.com.my\/pendidikan\/kssm-bermula-2017-1.422003\">KSSM<\/a> in 2017.\u00a0 Yup.\u00a0 Indeed.\u00a0 It makes the PT3 for this year different from the last year.\u00a0 Last year, there was literature part.\u00a0 But there is no more literature part in PT3 this year.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>But does the change matters?\u00a0<\/strong> Well, there are lots of criticism that you find from various parties like teachers, parents and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/opinion\/letters\/2017\/10\/12\/dont-rush-through-change\/\">others<\/a> who are concern with the latest development.\u00a0 \u00a0Of course, it is kind of safe to say that you can&#8217;t see the impact now but have to wait for few years to see any improvement of the English language proficiency among Malaysians.\u00a0 Yet, there are various elements that I notice in the textbooks used for the new curriculum.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">When I taught form 1 last year (2018) when I did my Latihan Ikhtisas, other than the literary part (poems and short story\/graphic novel), I have to use Pulse 2 textbook to teach form 1 class (which is not readily available in any bookstore like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mphonline.com\/en\/productdetails\/school-references\/text-books\/9789672070016\">MPH<\/a> and such.\u00a0 But you can but the workbook from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lazada.com.my\/products\/english-pulse-2-workbook-form-1-2-i460222709-s727174035.html?ef_id=EAIaIQobChMIwNPoouSA4wIVh2kqCh0Y0wsOEAQYASABEgLY8PD_BwE:G:s&amp;s_kwcid=AL!3150!3!244160057898!!!u!296303633664!&amp;exlaz=d_1:mm_150050845_51350205_2010350205::12:1032211143!54400014687!!!pla-296303633664!c!296303633664!727174035!125966237&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMIwNPoouSA4wIVh2kqCh0Y0wsOEAQYASABEgLY8PD_BwE\">Lazada<\/a> though).\u00a0 There are lots of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nst.com.my\/opinion\/columnists\/2017\/12\/311230\/textbooks-do-not-make-teacher\">criticism<\/a> on this by teachers.\u00a0 \u00a0I reserve to comment on this matter.\u00a0 After all, who am I to comment on this matter when I am not even a teacher?\u00a0 \ud83d\ude00<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">So, my initial thought is when the PT3 has no longer the literature part starting this year, so it would be the same for SPM then in the next two years.\u00a0 How wrong I was?\u00a0 They are introducing &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/nation\/2019\/06\/23\/new-spm-english-lit-syllabus\/\">new&#8221; literature content<\/a>.\u00a0 <strong> So, what&#8217;s new, pussycat?\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, the Education director-general <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/nation\/2019\/06\/23\/new-spm-english-lit-syllabus\/\">Datuk Dr Amin Senin<\/a> explained the new stuff would be included in the current curriculum.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">For an 18-month curriculum, students have to learn 10 poems, one novel or six short stories, and one drama.\u00a0 Sound quite the same, right with the current practice?\u00a0 Wait until you see the lists though.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Among the literature contents that they have to learn is The Merchant of Venice (William Shakespeare), The Clay Marble (Minfong Ho), and Embra\u00adcing Your Shadow (Chua Kok Yee).
