We have known each other more than 20 years.\u00a0 As our life start to unfold into different spectrum and colors, we keep in touch once in a blue moon while respecting each other space.\u00a0 Little that I know our meeting would be a little bit different this time around.\u00a0 She called to say that she was in JB.\u00a0 To be specific, she was staying at Pulai Spring.\u00a0 I was in a middle of a meeting.\u00a0 I told her to give me another half an hour.\u00a0 She called me again as I was about to leave the meeting.\u00a0 I rushed to my room to pick up my purse and as it was inside my Ikea red foldable shopping bag, I just grabbed it.\u00a0 I met her who was waiting in front of Canseleri Building.\u00a0 Above all places that she can park her black Mercedes, she chose that special place!<\/span><\/p>\n

She sounded chirpy than usual.\u00a0 Or is it my imagination that when we met few years ago she sounded more serious?\u00a0 I greet her with a hug.\u00a0 Did we hug last time when we met?\u00a0 I just could not help from thinking that she was a bit different this time around.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was lunch time and I asked if she had her lunch.\u00a0 She told me that she had her lunch at the hotel where she was staying.\u00a0 She told me that she just want to have a chat with me.\u00a0 To catch up with an old friend.\u00a0 Yup.\u00a0 We met at IIUM Matriculation centre in 1996.\u00a0 We had many classes together since we both majored in psychology.<\/span><\/p>\n

We decided to have light munchies and hot drinks at McD.\u00a0 After we took our seat while waiting for our order, she had a quick look at me.\u00a0 I was wearing a black jubah and shawl with flowery design.\u00a0 Of course, she noticed my Ikea red plastic bag.\u00a0 “Dij, you are still you.\u00a0 You can afford to buy more expensive bag than that!\u00a0 But, hey we are the same!\u00a0 We don’t care about the brand as long as it is practical<\/em>“.\u00a0 She laughed after saying this.\u00a0 Looking at myself, I laughed at own self too.\u00a0 “I don’t have that typical image of a lecturer, huh?<\/em>”\u00a0 I asked her.\u00a0 She said “No.\u00a0 Don’t get me wrong.\u00a0 I am glad that you are still like this.\u00a0 You don’t change much, don’t you?<\/em>”\u00a0 I just laughed.\u00a0 I have changed a lot, but there are some parts of me that still the same.\u00a0 I told her that at this age, there are so many things have changed.\u00a0 I told her that I start to have grey hair and I also have nearsightedness.\u00a0 I am old. Age is catching up.\u00a0 Both of us laughed again.\u00a0 We have a good time to tease each other this time around.\u00a0 I feel somehow our friendship has matured to different level.<\/span><\/p>\n

We asked each other about the latest development in our life and suddenly she told me this “Dij, I am on medical leave because I have depression<\/em>.”\u00a0 I was shocked.\u00a0 I was in the similar situation and I know it is not easy without intervention and professional help.\u00a0 I asked her “Do you have to take any medication?<\/em>”\u00a0 She told me that a psychiatrist gives her some medication to take.\u00a0 I didn’t know how to react.\u00a0 She is a dear friend.\u00a0 I know her family and siblings. I have met her mom and dad.\u00a0 Her mom still remembers me.\u00a0 Gosh, it is not easy to share this news.\u00a0 Looking at how quiet I was, she assured me that she is ok.\u00a0 She is in a better situation than before.\u00a0 Then, she laughed.\u00a0 “Dij, I am really ok.\u00a0 I am glad that you still want to meet me even though I know that you are busy.\u00a0 You know, there are some of our friends who don’t want to meet me when I ask them out to hang out”.\u00a0 <\/em>\u00a0She updated me about her family and both of her parents are retired.\u00a0 Alhamdulillah, both of them are well.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Then she suggested that we should take a picture.\u00a0 “I want to meet Dee on my way back to KL tonight and I want to show her our picture<\/em>“, she told me.\u00a0 “Tonight?\u00a0 When are you planning to meet her?<\/em>” I asked her.\u00a0 “Around 7 or 8pm?<\/em>”\u00a0 she replied.\u00a0 \u00a0Dee is our friend.\u00a0 A Mary Kay advocate.\u00a0 She converts most of our friends to become MK users.\u00a0 \u00a0She is a business-minded type.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Did Dee approach you to use MK product?<\/em>”\u00a0 I asked.\u00a0 “You?<\/em>”\u00a0 she asked me back.\u00a0 We looked at each other and laughed.\u00a0 That’s the answer!\u00a0 We don’t have to say anything to know the answer.\u00a0 Old friends can read each other’s mind quite well.\u00a0 Indeed.<\/span><\/p>\n

The lunch time was almost finished and she wanted to meet another friend before she went back to KL.\u00a0 We had to say Goodbye now.\u00a0 She sent me back to UTM at 2pm just in time for me to go for another meeting.\u00a0 I told her that I didn’t have the opportunity yet to show her my office and faculty.\u00a0 She told me “I guess we have to think about another meeting.\u00a0 Perhaps you will show me around more<\/em>“.\u00a0 In sha Allah.<\/span><\/p>\n
