Audi cars allegedly fooled environmental regulators\u00a0by emitting less carbon-dioxide\u00a0on a testing mount than the cars allowed themselves to spew\u00a0when\u00a0on the road, the\u00a0weekly German paper\u00a0Bild am Sonntag\u00a0<\/em>reports<\/a>.\u00a0It\u2019s the same trick that Audi and other Volkswagen brands\u00a0had earlier used to defeat tests of their diesel cars\u2019 emissions of\u00a0nitrous oxides.<\/p>\n

Nitrous oxides are a component of ground-level smog, which is harmful to health. Carbon emissions are a\u00a0greenhouse gas.<\/p>\n

Both the earlier\u00a0scam and the current alleged scam were uncovered not in Europe\u2014where most of the test-evasion took place\u2014but in the United States. The nitrous oxides scandal\u2014which\u00a0has\u00a0cost VW billions of dollars in fines and compensation and a recall of some 9 million\u00a0cars\u2014was discovered a year ago by engineers at\u00a0West Virginia University\u2019s Center for Alternative Fuels, Engines and Emissions.\u00a0And the alleged evasion of carbon-emissions testing was found by\u00a0the\u00a0California Air Resources Board (CARB), in research conducted in both diesel and gasoline-powered Audis\u00a0over the summer, the German paper reports.<\/p>\n

So far neither Audi nor CARB have commented on the latest report.<\/p>\n

The cars defeated the carbon test by using data from the wheels and steering wheel to\u00a0figure\u00a0out whether the car was up on a test mount. \u201cIf the steering wheel is not moved after the start, a shift program activates itself in automatic gearboxes, with which particularly little CO2<\/sub>\u00a0is emitted; if the driver turns the steering wheel, this\u00a0\u2018warm-up strategy\u2019\u00a0is deactivated,\u201d says Bild am Sonntag<\/em>, as rendered by Google Translate.<\/p>\n

The Wall Street Journal\u00a0<\/em>reports<\/a> that\u00a0the carbon-dioxide cheat\u00a0was\u00a0discussed by high-level officials of VW and Audi\u00a0at an\u00a0event in South Africa in 2013, two years before the nitrous-oxide cheat came to light.\u00a0\u201cThe shifting program needs to be configured so that it runs at 100 percent\u00a0on the treadmill but only 0.01 percent\u00a0with the customer,\u201d said\u00a0Axel Eiser, the head of Audi\u2019s powertrain division, according minutes of the discussions that the newspaper cites.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
