AKEPT Leadership Sustainable Development Program

BALI, 13 October 2017 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia is represented by Dr. Irina Safitri Zen from Faculty of Built Environment as the project leader for this program; Sustainability leadership program for ASEAN community in Higher Education. This program was held in Bali on 8 – 13 October 2017 and funded by Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT) and join organized with UTM. For this year Bali Island was chosen as a cultural landscape of World Heritage Site (WHS) of UNESCO in Indonesia and Subak System as a case study.

The objective of the program is to expose the ASEAN HEI leadership with a complex, interrelated, and of the anthropogenic man and environment problems in development opposed the strong local cultural values and to provide a platform for university leaders to discuss issues on higher education in adopting SDG Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework in the ASEAN region.


The program was conducted through a combination of 30 % of classroom activities i.e. the input lecturer of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Sustainability Science and the issue and challenges in managing the WHS, and 70% of site visit as a method of transformational research and community engagement. The site visit selected i. the Jatiluwih as a cultural landscape of rice terrace, ii.  Subak as the traditional water irrigation system and iii. The Royal Water Temple off Pura Taman  Ayun. The collaboration partner for this program is the Subak expert from Universitas Udayana and Universitas Mahasaraswati, Denpasar, Bali.
