A Training Recap at the Faculty of Computing, UTM

I recently had the opportunity to co-host a training session on “Developing Teaching & Learning Video Lessons using OBS Studio” for the Faculty of Computing at UTM. It was a fantastic experience collaborating with a knowledgeable colleague and engaging with a diverse group of faculty members from both technical (J) and computing (F) backgrounds.

The training aimed to equip them with the skills to create high-quality instructional videos using OBS Studio, a free and powerful software program. The Faculty’s recent investment in camera and audio equipment further empowers them to produce professional-looking content for their students.

A Collaborative Approach:

My teammate kicked off the morning session by delving into the rich features of OBS Studio. This included exploring overlays, lower thirds, window capture, the audio mixer, and other essential functionalities.

Diving into Technical Setup:

In the afternoon, I took the reins, focusing on the technical aspects of video and audio production for OBS. While the first 30 minutes covered the basics of camera FPS, video resolution, video capture cards, and some theory on NDI technology for screen sharing, I also managed to introduce them to the exciting world of NDI.

Hands-on Learning:

The highlight of the session was the practical component. We gathered everyone for a hands-on installation session. We connected video capture cards and Rode USB audio to laptops, showcasing the process smoothly. We randomly engaged participants who were less familiar with the equipment, fostering a collaborative learning environment. It was heartwarming to witness their enthusiasm and cooperative spirit throughout the entire setup process.

Beyond the Basics:

Although time flew by quickly, we successfully covered some essential OBS features. Importantly, we were able to share valuable tips on fostering creativity in video production. We emphasized the importance of pre-designing graphics beforehand, which significantly streamlines the live video production process.

This training session at UTM was a rewarding experience. While some participants were already familiar with OBS and live streaming, we were able to equip them with new skills and inspire them to think creatively when developing their teaching materials.
