Survey Camp I (SBEU2141) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is a practical field course designed for geomatics and surveying students. It provides hands-on experience in various surveying techniques, including leveling, traversing, topographic mapping, and GPS applications. The camp aims to strengthen students’ skills in data collection, processing, and presentation while fostering teamwork and problem-solving abilities. Through these field exercises, students also gain exposure to various surveying techniques while improving their teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The camp covers several key activities, including traverse surveying, leveling, GNSS observations for topographic and engineering mapping applications. Students learn to establish control points using GNSS\/total stations, determine precise height measurements with automatic levels, and generate contour maps to represent terrain features. Additionally, they engage in topographic surveying by collecting field data and creating digital maps. The course also introduces GNSS technology for positioning and control, with a focus on CRM data processing and coordinate computation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from data collection, students participate in detail survey and as-built survey activities, where they mark topographic and engineering elements. Survey data is processed using specialized software such as Trimble Business Centre (TBC), Civil Design and Survey (CDS), AutoCAD and GIS programs. A crucial aspect of the camp involves preparing technical reports and delivering presentations to communicate findings effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assessment in Survey Camp I is based on fieldwork accuracy, data processing efficiency, teamwork, and the quality of final reports and presentations. The camp typically scheduled from 12-24 February 2025 and is conducted at designated surveying sites within our UTM Johor Bahru Campus. By the end of the course, the students can gain a deeper understanding of surveying principles while honing their practical skills, preparing them for future professional challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
