Academic Leadership


Academic leadership is crucial in shaping the direction and success, especially in higher learning institution. A great leader makes major decisions and determining goals to focus to for the future of the institution. Academic leadership is needed in every level of an organisation in order to create a culture of excellence and continuous quality improvements, with full commitments to scholarship, research and ethical conduct.

A good leader should have a clear vision and mission for the organisation, and able to communicate those vision and mission effectively. Effective communications are necessary for clear directions, alignment, unity and eliminates ambiguity and confusion, which helps in decision making and better understanding of each person’s roles and responsibility. Organisation may be able to focus on the work in hand to achieve the same goals and may lead to long-term success.

Empathy is also an important trait of a good leader. It allows leaders to connect and understand the need of the staffs and students. Empathetic academic leader fosters a positive, supportive and inclusive work environment that prioritise mental health and well-being of the staff and students. It can be achieved through initiative and policies that put the well-being of the staff and students first.

A respected academic leader should expect that respect is a two-way street. Respect should be earned, not given. Respect is earned through transparent decision-making, upholding ethical standard consistently and dedication for the betterment of the organisation and its environment. Mutual respect is cultivated through actions by walking-the-talk and will set an example for others to follow.
