Channel estimation (CE) is a challenging task for such high speed channels due to fast variation of the fading coefficients, and the CE accuracy can significantly affect the overall system performance. In this talk, we consider the basis expansion model (BEM) of the channel for which very few unknown coefficients need to be estimated. We propose Huffman sequence-based CE for single-carrier communication over fast fading multi-path wireless channels. A low-complexity pilot placement strategy is then discussed which improves the channel estimation performance significantly.

Biography: Kushal Anand received his Ph.D. from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore in 2017. He is currently a Research Fellow with the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, NTU. His research interests include signal processing for wireless communications, channel estimation and interference management in multi-user wireless networks.

2. Title: DSRC safety message relaying at road intersection

Speaker: Dr. Hieu Nguyen, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore

Abstract: Basic Safety Message (BSM) communication is an essential part of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication to avoid accidents. In an urban road intersection, V2V communication is heavily obstructed due to the concrete buildings and hence the vehicles, resided in perpendicular streets, cannot communicate with each other. To improve the performance of V2V communication, we propose the relaying of BSM through a road side unit (RSU) while employing spatial filtering. This technique enables the communication between the vehicles of perpendicular streets and hence enhances the road safety.

Biography: Hieu Nguyen received the Ph.D. degree in electronics engineering from Chungbuk National University, Cheongju, Korea, in 2007. His major research interests are signal processing for communications, multicarrier and multiple-antenna systems, and vehicular communications.

Title: From Connected vehicles to Internet-of-Things (IoT): Recent Advances in Communications and Networking

Speaker: Dr. Zhengguo Sheng, University of Sussex, UK

Abstract: Modern cars feature embedded systems that monitor and manage all the critical sensors and actuators. The in-vehicle connectivity can be further extended with Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technology, which allows cars to exchange that collected information and even act on it. Meanwhile, IoT will increase the pervasiveness of the Internet and the overall connectivity by integrating every “object” (e.g., sensors, smart phones, vehicles, infrastructures and external management platform) forming a fully connected system. By developing mission-critical and intelligent communications and networking capabilities, the combination of vehicles and IoT have the potential to reach a wide range of objectives at more cost effective ways.

Bio: Zhengguo Sheng has been a Senior lecturer in the Department of Engineering and Design at University of Sussex since 2018. He received his Ph.D. and M.S. with distinction at Imperial College London in 2011 and 2007, respectively, and his B.Sc. from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) in 2006. From 2013 to 2014, he was a research associate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada. From 2011 to 2013, he was with France Telecom Orange Labs as the senior researcher and project manager in M2M/IoT. During 2009, he also worked as a research intern with IBM T. J.
