3 Minute Thesis Competition – FBME Level
Alhamdulillah, we managed to handle 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition in FBME level. This is one of the programs should be managed by PGSS FBME. There were 13 contestants involved and one of them is my PhD student. The competition was held on 19th March 2017 at Academic Meeting Room, V01, FBME.
Surprisingly, my student won 3rd place. That is a wonderful moment for him and will be representing FBME for next level.
2nd Meeting of the Year 2017 – PGSS FBME
This is the second meeting in 2017 for PostGraduate Students Society (PGSS), Faculty of Biosciences and Medical Engineering, UTM. FYI, I was appointed as an Advisor of the society by the faculty last year. A lot of activities we planned and try to conduct in the year of 2017 for PG students and UG students as well. Since the first meeting was only four of them, so I called them to this meeting discussing upcoming events which are Three-Meeting Thesis Competition and FBME Innovation Day 2017 (which is already passed, I will upload pictures and post later, not enough time to post everything in one time :))), at the same time to know each others (new committees were appointed by the top management of PGSS).

Presentation – Biomedical System Design SMBE 4313
Last semester, I taught Biomedical System Design course for final year students of Biomedical Engineering Programme. This course mainly focused on designing and creating a new prototype that related to the medical application. For the first half of semester, our former faculty lecturer (Dr. Dedy) taught them. Later, the second half of semester, I took a place to replace Dr. Dedy (he have transferred to Indonesia). There were 5 groups presented their final products on 21st December 2016. Here are the five groups presented their final products:
1. Machino (Product name: Crampino)
Objectives:
1. To develop a muscle relieve device that can be controlled by user itself
2. To minimize the help from other people during muscle cramp
3. To provide difference angle of flexion for calf muscle
2. Synergy 6 (Product name: Oxynergy)
Objectives:
1. To create a simple interface device to monitor oxygen concentration
2. To design a wireless pulse oximeter which allows remote measurement
3. Schepper (Product name: V2H Care)
Objectives:
1. To reduce back pain of the user
2. To compensate the user’s imbalance
4. Concevoir (Product name : Vi Track)
Objectives:
1. To produce a device which able to produce warning in terms of alarm (tactile or auditory) when detecting any obstacles in front of the user within several range.
5. Consilium (Product name: Inteligente Guanto)
Objectives:
1. To help the stroke patient in terms of communication with the caretaker and rehabilitation can be achieved.
For your information, they spent only Rm100 for their final products. This is a very low-cost product and really hope one that our biomedical engineers can have in mind to reduce cost for medical devices such this example.
Call for Paper – iMEDITEC2017
It is with great pleasure that we announce the 2017 International Medical Devices & Technology Conference (http://www.utm.my/imeditec2017), to be held in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia on 6-7 September 2017. The conference will exhibit exciting technical programme highlighting recent progress in all major areas of medical devices and their related technologies. It will also feature high-quality workshops, industry panels and exhibitions as well as keynotes from prominent researchers and industry leaders.
This conference is expected to attract many experts in the field and will be the venue for medical device industries to promote their products. The Chief Executive of Medical Device Authority (MDA) and other government organisations will also participate in this conference.

3rd meeting of iMEDITEC2017
On 7th March 2017, the third meeting of iMEDITEC2017 was held at Ibnu Nafis Seminar Room, Level 4, Blok A, FBME. The agenda of the meeting was to discuss three major issues related to the conference: publication, marketing and sponsorship. Final decision of the venue was made, all committees agreed to conduct the conference in Johor Bahru.
During the meeting, Dr. Nazri presented his experience on how to do marketing. This includes FB page, hash tag and give free coupon.

Sharing Session by Dr. Ryte Ziuriene
A sharing session on ‘Horizon 2020 Funding Opportunities & Erasmus Program: How to Secure?’ delivered by Dr Ryte Ziuriene from Vilnius Gedimino Technikos Universitetas (VGTU) was held at CICT UTM on 6th March 2017. Dr Ryte is an expert evaluator on Horizon 2020 at European Commission. This session was held in conjunction with her visit to UTM International under the ERASMUS Program. After attending this session, I received some information and tips on how to secure these international grants.
A collaboration meeting at Hospital Sultan Ismail (HSI) Johor Bahru
Last 2 weeks, on 23rd of February 2017, a delegation of lecturers from Faculty of Biosciences and Medical Engineering have attended a collaboration meeting with the top management of Hospital Sultan Ismail (HSI) Johor Bahru. We were five from UTM; Dr. Ahmad Zahran, Dr. Mohd Najeb, Dr. Asnida Wahad, Dr. Maheza and myself Dr. Hanif. There were more than 5 of medical surgeons from HSI have attended this meeting, include Dr. Azizah (Director of HSI), Dr. Nani (Rehabilitation Dep.), Dr. Shandran, Dr. Khairul, Pn. Inna, Pn Aisyah, Pn Siti Aminah and others. The meeting was held at 10.00 AM. The agenda of the meeting was the possibility to have research collaboration between UTM and HSI. We then visited the Department of Rehabilitation.
iMEDITEC2017 Meeting – 7 Feb 2017
On 9th Feb 2017, I attended a meeting of iMEDITEC2017. As a Secretary General together with Dr. Asnida Wahad, we are responsible for collecting all input during the meeting and distribute to the committee afterward.
