Essence<\/em> magazine gave us a big dose of #BlackGirlMagic on Wednesday with its reveal of the February 2016 issue.<\/p>\n

Featuring social activist Johnetta Elzie on one of three covers<\/a>, which also include actresses Teyonah Parris and Yara Shahidi, the Black History Month issue celebrates the black women “shaping our future.”<\/p>\n

As a women’s lifestyle magazine, Essence<\/em>‘s decision to\u00a0include Elzie in the cover series speaks volumes about the increasing presence of activism in our everyday lives.<\/p>\n

Elzie became a prominent voice in the Black Lives Matter movement following the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, in August 2014. She cofounded We The Protesters<\/a>, an activist group dedicated to racial justice and protesting against police brutality, and she was recently recognized in The Root 100<\/a> 2015 list for her organizing work and efforts behind Campaign Zero<\/a>, a comprehensive list of policy demands<\/a> for criminal justice reform.
