The next stop on Refaai Hamo’s unlikely journey from successful family man to illness-stricken refugee to international symbol of compassion and hope is now settled. The Syrian scientist has a seat reserved for him at President Barack Obama<\/a>‘s State of the Union address this Tuesday \u2014 as a special guest of the Obamas themselves, no less<\/p>\n

And it’s all because of a portrait project a former bond trader started on a lark half a decade ago<\/p>\n

Hamo is one of several invited guests at Tuesday’s address, the White House announced Sunday morning. But President Obama didn’t become aware of Hamo’s story through diplomatic channels or international bureaucratic machinations.
