The Trinidad moruga scorpion is recognized as the hottest chili pepper on the planet \u2014 but it\u2019s unlikely we could all agree on the hotness of any<\/em> pepper without Wilbur Scoville.<\/p>\n

Scoville, who was born 151 years ago on Jan. 22, developed a way of measuring the heat you feel when eating various peppers. The Scoville scale measures how much sugar must be added to equal parts ground-up pepper before you stop feeling a hot sensation on your tongue. Since the scale’s conception, the strength of peppers has been noted in Scoville heat units, which are measured in the thousands.
