I<\/span>n the summer of 2014,<\/span> Lee-Anne Walters \u2014 a mother of four in Flint, Michigan \u2014 noticed something strange. Guests in her swimming pool developed \u201cscabies-like\u201d rashes. Her family\u2019s hair was thinning and falling out. One of her 4-year-old twin sons, Gavin, was not growing. He developed speech problems. Her husband developed abscesses.<\/p>\n

There were \u201call these different things,\u201d but \u201cwe weren\u2019t putting it together,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

By fall, when water in her faucet began running yellow and brown, Walters knew: The water wasn\u2019t safe.<\/p>\n

Though it wouldn\u2019t be confirmed until much later, she was right. The city\u2019s water was heavily contaminated by lead, which studies have linked to chronic and irreversible health problems, especially for children, including learning disabilities, mental retardation, stunted growth, seizures and even death.
