LOS ANGELES \u2014 Kendrick Lamar and Taylor Swift were not only the biggest winners of the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, but also its saviors. In a night of predictable performances and even more predictable winners, they made bold statements: Lamar\u00a0with music and spectacle, Swift with words pointed directly at Kanye West.<\/p>\n

The Grammys\u00a0are usually a\u00a0good\u00a0mix of musical uppers and downers\u00a0\u2014 there’s the performance equivalents of NyQuil,<\/a> the shots of absinthe<\/a>,\u00a0and the craft beer in between<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But on Monday night,\u00a0two of the most anticipated\u00a0performers \u2014 Rihanna<\/a> and surprise performer Lauryn Hill<\/a> \u2014 backed out\u00a0at the last minute, leaving a show\u00a0that, for most of its three-hour-plus runtime, \u00a0felt like we were still waiting for something<\/em> to happen.
