Should tech companies provide governments with backdoors to their products, enabling them to bypass encryption and access people’s personal data? Apple’s answer is a resolute no.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Apple CEO Tim Cook published a long open letter to the company’s customers, explaining why Apple is challenging the FBI’s recent demand<\/a> for Apple to hack into the phone belonging to one of the San Bernardino shooters. \u00a0<\/p>\n

According to Cook, the government is demanding much more from Apple than breaking into just one device.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“They have asked us to build a backdoor to the iPhone. Specifically, the FBI wants us to make a new version of the iPhone operating system, circumventing several important security features, and install it on an iPhone recovered during the investigation. In the wrong hands, this software \u2014 which does not exist today \u2014 would have the potential to unlock any iPhone in someone\u2019s physical possession,” he wrote<\/a>.\u00a0
