In the last year, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has been campaigning for its Digital India initiative to connect the majority of Indians who do not have access to the Internet. However rather than viewing techonology as empowering, several village councils in the country are still trying to prohibit the use of mobile phones among girls and young women.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, the Suraj village in Modi’s home state Gujarat banned teenage girls and single young women from using mobile phones.<\/p>\n

The decision was taken by the village council in Mehsana district, which felt that technology was a “nuisance to society.” The village head also compared<\/a> the use of mobile phones to liquor and said that they distracted girls from studies and household work. Read more…<\/a><\/p>\n
