LONDON \u2014 Offshore companies based in tax havens like the British Virgin Islands own an area in Britain that’s three times the size of Greater London, a report<\/a>\u00a0reveals.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A staggering 1.2 million acres of land (1875 square miles) in the UK is owned offshore, Global Witness says, based on the database of land registry leaked<\/a> to Private Eye Magazine.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That includes vast chunks of central London’s Baker Street, which are owned by a collection of offshore companies allegedly linked<\/a> to Kazakh businessman\u00a0Rakhat Aliyev and his family.\u00a0<\/p>\n
