LONDON \u2014 David Cameron has announced that he will resign as prime minister in October as British people have voted to leave the European Union.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cameron, who campaigned for the Remain camp, said he is not the “captain” that will steer the ship through difficult negotiations with the EU.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“The will of the British people is an instruction that must be delivered,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Using the past tense, he added:\u00a0 \u201cI am very proud and honoured to have been prime minister of this country for six years.\u201d<\/p>\n
