Verizon\u2019s $4.83 billion acquisition<\/a> of Yahoo\u2019s core business, announced today, marks the end of Yahoo\u2019s 22-year run as an independent company.<\/p>\n

In January 1994, Stanford University graduate students Jerry Yang and David Filo created a hierarchically-organized directory of websites imaginatively called \u201cJerry and David\u2019s Guide to the World Wide Web.\u201d<\/p>\n

They renamed the site to Yahoo in April, taking the name from the race of rude, coarse and unpleasant beings in Jonathan Swift\u2019s novel Gulliver\u2019s Travels<\/i>, though they also came up with a way for it to serve as an acronym \u2014 \u201cYet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle.\u201d Read more…<\/a><\/p>\n
