Self-reflection of teaching development (2021/2022)
I’ve been teaching and learning (T&L) activity for about ten years and have seen significant improvements in T&L activities supported and encouraged by UTM. UTM, through UTMLead, urges us to focus on non-traditional T&L methodologies such as blended learning employing Elearning or other media social platforms, as well as New Academia Learning Innovation (NALI) approaches. When compared to traditional lecturing methods, these tactics have a greater overall influence on students’ growth and boost lecturer productivity and competency. By utilising these unconventional methods, lecturers are able to focus on other tasks, namely research and other professional services. For example, the usage of Elearning allows us to upload lecture notes from anywhere in the globe and efficiently engage with students. Another example is the use of social media, such as the creation of a Facebook group, which may help us strengthen our contact with students. NALI also assists us in applying new tools in T&L, which may increase our inventive and creative thinking and mentality. Students can actively participate in T&L and increase their comprehension and general abilities by practising active learning. In my class, I am more adaptable to the needs of the students since I think they are learning something. We make numerous mistakes during learning, and by being flexible and open-minded, students may benefit from their blunders. According to student comments, I am a patient and extremely professional at all times, responsive, responsible, effective, enthusiastic and concerned about students, a committed lecturer, who makes students comprehend and enjoy the active learning class. As a result, in the future, I will need to strengthen my T&L activities by incorporating non-traditional T&L activities and maintain strong connection with the student.
During the MCO, it is quite difficult to perform the class since half of the class must perform online, and some students do not have the capabilities to complete online T&L activities. As a result, now is the moment for me to demonstrate empathy to the students by creating online T&L activities that are available to all students. I created a Facebook Group for convenience of communication and constantly made announcements. The lecture notes’ slide videos were made in each sections, and the video file was compressed so that students could simply download the films and study the subject through this video. Students appear to be coping with this online strategy because all students virtually precisely follow the offered instructions.
