Self-reflection of teaching development (2019/2020)

I have experience in teaching and learning for almost 10 years and during that period I can see there are improvement in T&L activities supported and suggested by UTM. UTM, under UTMLead encourages us to focus on various non-conventional techniques in T&L such as blended learning using Elearning or other media social tools and New Academia Learning Innovation (NALI) approaches. These techniques are more impactful to students’ development holistically and also increase lecturer’s productivity and competency. By doing these non-conventional techniques, lecturer can also focus on other responsibilities mainly research and other professional services. For example, the use of Elearning assists us in uploading lecture notes anywhere in the world and we can communicate with students effectively. In another example, the use of social media such as creating Facebook group can also improve our communication with students. NALI also help us in using innovative tools in T&L which can also improve our way of thinking and mindset innovative and creatively. In practicing active learning, students can actively involve in T&L and improved students understanding and generic skills. In my class, I am more flexible to the students need because I believe that they are in the process of learning something. In the learning process, we usually do many mistakes and by being flexible and open minded, students will learn from their mistakes. There is feedback from students saying that I am an easy-going person, systematic and hardworking lecturer, passionate and concern towards students, dedicated lecturer, makes students understand and student like the active learning class. Therefore, in the future, I need to improve my T&L activities using non-conventional T&L activities and sustain good communication with the student.

During the MCO, it is very challenging to perform the class because half of the class need to perform online and there are some students who did not have enough facilities to perform online T&L activities. Therefore, this is time for me to practice empathy to students by making online T&L activities that accessible to all students. For ease and effective communication, I made Facebook Group and always gave announcement. The slide videos from the lecture notes were prepared in different parts and the file of the video was compressed so that the students can easily download the video and learn the subject through this video. Students seem to cope with this online technique because all students follow the given instruction almost perfectly.
