The Process Systems Engineering Centre (PROSPECT) is a research facility at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) that operates under the Research Institute for Sustainable Environment (RISE) within the Faculty of Chemical and Energy Engineering. PROSPECT focuses on addressing contemporary challenges in process engineering, particularly in the context of sustainability, renewable energy, and climate change mitigation.
KALAM was appointed to help develop the center’s interior design ideas. This project is led by Noraslinda binti Abdul Rahman with a combination of various experts expertise.
UTM PROSPECT’s tagline is Engineering Sustainability for the betterment of mankind. The proposed color palette for space design is white, green, blue, brown and gray in accordance with the color of the logo. The UTM Prospect interior design emphasizes the concept of “Biophilic” in the office environment as an approach that integrates natural elements into the workplace to improve the well-being and productivity of employees. This concept is rooted in the idea of biophilia, which suggests that humans have a natural connection with nature. By incorporating elements such as natural materials, light, plants and water features, biophilic design aims to create a more harmonious and health-promoting work environment.
The design of this space involves research on the function of the space and the identity of the user. The key elements of Biophilic Office Design including:
Natural Light: Maximizing the use of natural light through large windows or skylights can create a more inviting and energizing atmosphere.
Green Walls and Indoor Plants: Living walls and strategically placed plants can bring greenery into the office, improving aesthetics and providing psychological benefits.
Water Features: Incorporating elements like fountains or aquariums can add soothing sounds and visual interest, enhancing the overall sensory experience of the workspace.
Natural Materials: Using materials such as wood, stone, and earth tones can create a warm and organic feel that connects the interior space to the natural world.
Open Spaces and Outdoor Areas: Designing open areas that allow for interaction with nature, such as rooftop gardens or patios, can provide employees with spaces for relaxation and socialization.
