Who I am ?

Norazila Othman received her Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical-Aeronautics) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 2009. She was appointed as a tutor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, UTM, on 9 July 2009. Then, she continued her study for a Master of Engineering (Mechanical) at UTM and graduated in 2012. Based on her excellent achievement in academic and extracurricular activities, she was offered an opportunity to pursue her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree at Tokyo Metropolitan University, Tokyo, Japan. She embraced the challenge, and with diligence and perseverance, she obtained her Ph.D. in the Graduate School of System Design in Aerospace Engineering in October 2016. She is currently a senior lecturer in the Department of Aeronautics, Automotive, and Ocean Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Johor. She is a member of the Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) and actively involved in the IEM Southern Branch, Johor Bahru. She is also a professional technologist recognized by the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBoT), specializing in aerospace and aviation technology. Currently, she is the only woman in the faculty who has received her Professional Engineer from the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), who carries the title Ir. in Mechanical Engineering since 2023. She has held several positions that were major in research, including Head of Laboratory for Gas Turbine and Combustion (GTC) Laboratory, assistant chairman for research group of Sustainable Energy & Reacting Flow (SERF), document manager for the UTM Aeronautics Laboratory ISO 17025, and main trainer for hydrogen gas turbine crash course to TNB ILSAS. She has a strong connection with students and is the main technical advisor for the UTM Rocketry team for the LIMA Langkawi Talent Competition and the International Rocket Competition in New Mexico, USA. She has been involved with the students for student development and skills until today. In her teaching portfolio, she was a unique lecturer and inspired students due to her style of teaching. She received a course teaching award several times within 9 years of service in the faculty, such as for best blended teaching in Applied Thermodynamics & Heat Transfer and Applied Numerical Methods; thus, she secured the staff excellence award twice, in 2019 and 2023. She is currently an internal auditor for Jawatankuasa Keselamatan & Kesihatan Pekerjaan (JKKP), task force leader for curriculum review, and Anugerah Kualiti Akademik (AKA) under the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering from 2023 to 2024. For teaching, she has served and taught several courses related to mechanical and aeronautical engineering courses, such as thermodynamics, applied thermodynamics, heat transfer, applied numerical methods, and aircraft propulsion systems, with a total of 106 credit hours. Besides that, she is involved (both as Project Leader and Project Member) in numerous research projects funded by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), the Ministry of Defense Malaysia (MINDEF), the National Aerospace Industry Corporation (NAICO), and various private industries, as well as by the UTM. Her research interest focuses on combustion and propulsion technology. In combustion technology, her research focuses on gasification by using a variety of biomass waste to generate alternative gas fuel, a gas turbine power plant, and alternative liquid fuel for a power plant. In propulsion technology, her research expertise involved the development of solid and liquid propellants for rocket applications, micro gas turbine optimization using alternative fuels such as hydrogen, and combined power cycles. She has ventured into a new research area in developing a co-fired technology using hydrogen or ammonia to help the power plant industry align with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) initiative 2030 by reducing gas emissions and affordable clean energy, SGD 7. In the propulsion field, a new research area, she tries to establish from her expertise about the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) using the co-pyrolysis method from waste cooking oil with polypropylene plastic waste. She alerted the demand of the SAF, pyrolysis already established, and a new invention in her research pipeline. She has published multiple articles in both international and national journals. In addition to this, she has presented papers at international and national conferences and seminars. She has won several international and national recognitions, such as the Best Paper Award, Best Presenter Award, and Best Invention Award. She has obtained over 200 citations and an H-index of 7 in Scopus. She is also engaged with several consultancy projects involving local companies and organizations and has conducted training on diverse courses organized by the university as well as the industry. The current engagement is with TNB ILSAS with her team; she delivers the hydrogen gas turbine crash course to TNB executive staff until today. Her team has already secured this course since 2023. The related industry in the aerospace project for consultation was with G7 Aerospace and NAICO. She is directly involved in the project with G7 Aerospace for the internal combustion engine for fixed-wing aircraft, AERODEX, and Rocket Talent Challenge.
