IBIEC 2025 was held online from Politeknik Mukah, Sarawak begins from 23 July 2025 to 6 August 2025. My team and I secured the Gold Award with the Invention title ‘Intermediate Pyrolysis Innovation of Microalgae for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production’.

Abstract: The aviation industry released 882 million tonnes of CO2 in 2023, which represents about 2.05% of all human-induced CO2 emissions. Despite a 4.5% annual increase in airline traffic, they are under increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions, with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) emerging as a key solution. Among various feedstocks, microalgae offer significant potential due to their high lipid productivity, rapid growth rate, and ability to capture CO₂. The growing demand for SAF necessitates the development of efficient conversion technologies for renewable feedstocks. Intermediate pyrolysis has emerged as a promising thermochemical pathway for converting biomass into bio-oil, which can serve as a precursor for SAF. This innovation project setup aims for the design, fabrication, and commissioning of a fixed-bed batch reactor test rig for the intermediate pyrolysis of microalgae converted to SAF. The uniqueness of the test rig comprises a reactor system, a heating unit, a condensation and gas collection system, and a data acquisition setup to monitor process parameters such as temperature, residence time, and product yields. The successful fabrication and setup of the test rig provide a controlled environment for further investigation into process optimisation, catalyst screening, and feedstock variability. This study benefits the advancement of intermediate pyrolysis technology for SAF production, offering insights into scalable applications. In conclusion, SAF production is possible to obtain from microalgae, and extensive work includes conducting pyrolysis experiments, integrating catalytic upgrading strategies to enhance fuel properties, and performing long-term operational assessments to improve system reliability are crucial.
