Here&#8217;s how to be an educated data consumer<\/p>\n<p><strong>Know the elements of charts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ask questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"block-text block-text--onecol\">\n<div class=\"block-text__container\">\n<div class=\"block-text__row\">\n<div class=\"block-text__col brand--head\">\n<div class=\"brand--linkColor\">\n<div class=\" brand--linkColor\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n<div class=\"fr-view\">\n<p><strong>Watch for misleading or confusing charts<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"block-text__row\">\n<div class=\"block-text__col brand--body brand--linkColor\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n<div class=\"fr-view\">\n<p>When viewing charts, pay attention to the following items, as they are susceptible to design choices that mislead readers. Here are three examples.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"block-divider block-divider--spacing brand--afterHead\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em>Bar charts with an axis not including zero (0)-An axis without a zero can be misleading on a bar chart, as it can distort the scale of differences between categorical data.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\" brand--linkColor\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n<div class=\"fr-view\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em>Colour confusion-Color is an effective tool for drawing attention to or differentiating areas of data but can cause confusion if not used carefully. Be careful, as small differences will be hard to see.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993366\">Examples: Number of customers in different geographies.defect.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993366\">Area maps \u2014 Use for rates rather than totals. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993366\">Use a sensible base geography.
