Based on the class of “SOUL OF ACADEMIA” by Prof. Dr Rose Alinda Binti Alias, a lot of the inputs I find are particularly relevant “SOUL OF ACADEMIA”, I can conclude that being a lecturer is a must have ‘Soul of Academia’ in each other. Like me, who comes from a family of educators, I also aspire to be an educator. Because of the high demand for educators, I pledge myself to always be the best educator in the nation.
NOT everyone can be a good educator and a student, as the profession is very demanding of patience and faith if it is not to be appreciated wholeheartedly and physically. Generally, educators or lectures are those who work in the profession very noble and always highly regarded by the community. That’s why when someone chooses to become an educator, they are always seen as ‘role models’ and are respected.
However, despite the glory of being an educator, the profession has certain challenges because the process of teaching and teaching is always dealing with human weaknesses and the environment requires a high degree of patience. An educator should be generous, always patient, friendly and knowledgeable and care and love for their students. There are many challenges that a lecturer will face. Therefore, I as a lecturer who is an educator of indigenous peoples should have ‘soul of academia’ in helping students, communities, nations and countries and indirectly in religion.
My profession as a lecturer begins at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) a year ago. Although only a year old in this profession, I as a lecturer should have ‘soul of academia’. Everyone has their own ‘soul of academia’, just like me. ‘Soul of academia’ I was starting from the motto of UTM. UTM has a very “deep” and meaningful motto is ‘Kerana Tuhan Untuk Manusia’, through this motto I also commend myself as a lecturer who needs to give his best in helping the community. I believe that a lecturer is morally obligated to enter the classroom with only the highest of expectations for each and every one of her students. Thus, the lecturer maximizes the positive benefits that naturally come along with any self-fulfilling prophecy. With dedication, perseverance, and hard work, her students will rise to the occasion.
I aim to bring an open mind, a positive attitude, and high expectations to the classroom each day. I believe that I owe it to my students, as well as the community, to bring consistency, diligence, and warmth to my job in the hope that I can ultimately inspire and encourage such traits in the children as well
My goal in teaching is to foster the acquisition of a base of concepts and learning skills to facilitate further learning and thinking. In all of my courses I guide students in the evaluation of evidence, critical thinking, argument development, verbal and written expression, and the application of general principles to novel settings. These competencies will equip students for a broad range of demands in future academic and occupational setting
The challenges of educators in every tertiary institution are very different. Educating young children, teens and adults must use age-appropriate and background-based approaches. Guided by the philosophy of ‘making it easy for students, don’t enjoy them for small things and always being tolerant’ I find the world of education very fun. I also think educators need to be firm, yet gentle in their speaking and giving advice. Give the knowledge that we have with all sincerity and prayer to every student. Our variety of learners will provide an exciting experience, making me eager to continue my career as an educator. In addition, students come from many backgrounds. There came from a poor family, but eager to learn and acquire knowledge makes them willing to be away from family. That’s why I always try to get to know each of my students and to know their backgrounds to make it easier to interact and help when needed.
Additionally one of the reasons I choose to be a lecturer or educator is that through my one year of teaching as a lecturer I have had many painful experiences with students and many of them have had sweet experiences with me. This is also due to the nature of my love of listening and what their problems are and helping what they can. For me students like my own children or my sibling. Therefore, as educators, we must remember students’ names as they will appreciate them. If someone makes a mistake, call and advise them correctly because the student will be able to easily follow the advice and correct the error in that way.
In the end, being a good educator and being loved by a student is not a difficult task, but it must come from the heart and soul of sincerity as an educator. Educators not only serve as educators, but also must be motivators, counselors and motivators to all their students.
