The Sakura Science Exchange Programme, initiated by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), is a flagship initiative designed to encourage cross-cultural scientific cooperation and nurture a global network of talented researchers. The recent activities of Sakura Science Exchange Programme are hosted by Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST), from 5th to 14th October 2023, which initiated by Prof Yuki Nagao, leader of Japan’s host university.
Twelve faculty members, researchers, and graduate students from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) and Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) involved this cutting-edge exchange program and lead by Dr Nurfatehah Wahyuny (MJIIT UTM).

The purpose of this exchange was to strengthen collaboration between universities that will lead to internationally co-authored publication, with a focus on technical knowledge exchange in the field of environment and energy in Malaysia. Throughout the 10-day programme, participants engaged in a various activity, including immersive workshops, hands-on laboratory sessions particularly on analytical instrument measurement and research discussion session with respective supervisors in JAIST.

In addition to the academic agenda, the programme also facilitated cultural exchanges, enabling participants to immerse themselves in the rich heritage and traditions of Japan. All the participants were brought to experience Japanese culture and beauty through a gold leaf experience in Kanazawa’s Higashi Chaya District. The participants also indulge in an exciting experience of box making in Yunokuni no Mori accompanied by Yamaguchi-san, Ikuta-san and Prof Yuki Nagao.

Visiting Miraikan, the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, was an integral component of the enriching Sakura Science Program. Participants were given the opportunity to explore the cutting-edge exhibitions and interactive displays at Miraikan, delving into Japan’s forefront of technological advancements and scientific innovations. The visit to Miraikan provided a comprehensive understanding of Japan’s significant contributions to global scientific progress, fostering a deeper appreciation for the role of science and technology in shaping the future.

Beyond the scope of the exchange program, Dr. Nurfatehah Wahyuny was also appointed as a Visiting Research Fellow at JAIST under the mentorship of Prof. Yuki Nagao. Her research focused on the characterization of a Zinc-Oxide-based catalyst. Dr. Nurfatehah efficiently conducted comprehensive analyses of the as-prepared catalyst, utilizing advanced techniques such as the Smartlab X-ray Diffractometer for crystallinity measurement, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) for precise morphology assessment, and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) using the Kratos Axis-Ultra by Kratos Analytical Ltd., UK. The findings of her research were then diligently discussed with experts at JAIST, contributing to a profound understanding of the analytical results and their implications.

This successful collaboration marks a significant milestone in the continuous efforts to foster global scientific exchange and advance the frontiers of research and innovation. The positive outcomes of this programme are expected to have a lasting impact on the academic and scientific landscapes of both Malaysia and Japan, fostering enduring international partnerships and mutual growth in the field of scientific research and development.
