On 5th July 2024, I had the honour of joining the UTM MJIIT delegation at the 26th Japanese University Consortium (JUC) meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tokyo, Japan. The delegation, led by Prof. Dr. Mohd Shafry bin Mohd Rahim (Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic & Internationalization), included senior university leadership, MJIIT representatives, and collaborators from JICA.
The meeting was an important platform to showcase MJIIT’s achievements under the Look East Policy (LEP) and to discuss collaborative plans with JUC member universities in support of the Malaysia–Japan Linkage (MJL) Office. Prof. Dr. Mohd Shafry emphasized MJIIT’s role in delivering Japanese-style engineering education blended with Malaysian values for a sustainable future.
Prof. Ts. Dr. Ali bin Selamat, Acting Dean of MJIIT, shared updates on joint activities with JUC members , as well as strong partnerships with Japanese industries offering internships for MJIIT students. The delegation also received recognition from Prof. Masahiko Horie, former Ambassador to Malaysia, for MJIIT’s impactful contributions.
During the visit, we explored future collaborations through visits to Tokyo City University, Shibaura Institute of Technology, and the University of Tokyo, focusing on research exchanges, international internships, and academic mobility. Engagements with Shimizu Corporation, JETRO, JICA HQ, and JST further enhanced industrial and research networking efforts.
We also had a meaningful courtesy visit to the Embassy of Malaysia in Japan, where we were warmly received by Deputy Chief of Mission Mr. Anwar Udzir and officials who expressed support for MJIIT’s strategic initiatives.
A personal highlight was meeting MJIIT alumni currently based in Japan. Their achievements in both academia and industry reaffirm the strength of MJIIT’s education model and its growing global impact. This experience deepened my appreciation for the vital role of international partnerships in advancing research, education, and innovation at MJIIT.
