My Personal Leadership Development based on 4 Pillars of Leadership

1.Knowing who I am
a) what do I believe in?
I believe in working hard, working smart, and doing one thing at a time. Although there are many things that I want to do and finish them all, I must know my priority at that moment, considering that I have a family.
b) what is important?
Work might seem important, as it takes nearly one-third of our day, but family comes first. When I go to mandatory courses which are nearly 3 weeks, my husband willingly takes extra leave from work, to support me with the courses and take care of our 5-month-old baby. When both my husband and I work, and suddenly my 5-month-old baby is sick, my parents are there for us to take care of our baby. So, family is the most important for me.
c) what is your goal?
My goal is to be the expert in what I do now, which is in disaster risk management. To be the expertise, I need five to six years to establish the skills needed and do the networking with people within and outside academia.

2. Knowing what I do
a) My behaviour
My goal dictates my behaviour. I wrote earlier that my goal is to be the expertize in disaster risk management. Thus, I need to make sure that my goal is aligned with my behavior. I need to wake up early, dress up neat and nice, smile and greet people wherever I go, make sure I advise and supervise students with advice that they need to know, help my boss, speak with the right intonation, know how to behave according to places that I go. Also, I need to do networking with the right people, team, skills, and expertise.
b) My motivation
I will not lie here. My former motivation was to aspire to be a professor. That is still my motivation. But now that my baby has been born, my child is my biggest motivation. Whatever I do, I want the best for my baby and also to be a good example for her.

3) Knowing what I need to learn
a) Identify areas to learn

Areas that I need to learn and improve are public relations and networking. As a new lecturer, I am more academically inclined and forget to network with industries.
b) set up learning plan
I need to find a mentor who is good at networking and follow his or her example.

4) Apply what I know
a) build successful habits to support the pillars
I also believe in micro habits, where I do one small thing consistently, and over time, this will lead to massive change and success
b) create an environment for success
The environment is important for success where, where I need to surround myself with good and powerful people to speak and act like them without sacrificing my uniqueness and my talent.

To summarise, I need to take responsibility for developing my personal leadership skills and be disciplined in the areas I have influence over. Bad management, difficult bosses, terrible colleagues are things that are out of my control, and I should not focus on.
