Universiti teknologi Malaysia (UTM) was founded in 1904 as a Technical School. In 1941, the Advisory Committee of the Technical School and the Education had agreed to elevate the status of Technical School to Technical College. Technical College was built on a 47-acre Government land in Gurney Road (now Jalan Semarak), Kuala Lumpur. The Technical College was officially opened on March 1, 1955 after the occupation of Japan in World War II. Initially, Technical College conducted engineering course at diploma level in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Radio Engineering, land Surveying, Building Architecture and Quality Surveying. In 1960, the College began upgrading the engineering course to Degree level. Ministry of Education formed a committee in 1971 to study the feasibility of upgrading the College status to University. On March 14, 1972, DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Dipertuan Agong officailly proclaimed the formation of Insitut Teknologi Kebangsaan (ITK). On April 1, 1975, ITK was officially declared as Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.
